Replacing silver maple with smaller tree

I have a small yard with a silver maple less than 10 feet from my house. It's becoming an issue keeping it trimmed back, and after a recent visit from an arborist I learned I have probably 3-5 years before the roots start damaging foundations and the sidewalk. The plan is to remove it this fall before it becomes a problem and replace it with a smaller deciduous tree (zone 8 with clay soil). I'm leaning towards a Japanese snowbell or a sour wood, but would like other suggestions and any warnings about either tree (I want to avoid a tree that will cause root damage or be excessively messy). Looking for something that will have some height and provide some shade. The spot is shaded by the house until the afternoon, and then gets quiet a bit of sun for the rest of the day.
