last modified: 6 years ago

Hey! I am just a little tired of my home office (sometimes guest room) layout and I am looking for something better. I am curious what my options might be in this small space.

Room Dimensions:

Full Room- 9' 10.5" x 9'

Window- 4' 11" x 4' 10.5" (1' 11" off the floor)

Entryway width 3' into the room

Entryway door comes 2' 7.5" into the room when open

Closet width 2' 10" from wall

Closet door comes 2' 5" into the room when open

Furniture Dimensions:

Desk- Length: 3' 4", height: 2' 11", depth: 1' 10.25"

Couch- Length: 6' 10.5", height: 2' 8", depth: 2' 10"

Consider some of these as inspiration. Perhaps built-ins would work for you; there seems to be space enough for them.

I would place your sofa in the center of the current wall now.

Maybe (2) 12" x 24" side tables on each side of sofa. (if fits)

..... or mount to the wall a small shelf 10" x 24" to act as side tables at sofa arm height on the wall

Add Art or photo collage above sofa

Add a coffee table, either a single piece or 2 small 'storage' ottomans

Place your desk 'centered' on the wall, opposite the sofa, between the closet door and 'opened entry door'. Add a desk lamp.

    Computer on the desk

Mount the TV on the wall, above desk, above the computer height. Good viewing for TV from the sofa also.

Hey! Thanks for your suggestions. On the desk is actually two compu monitors not a compute monitor and tv.

The one thing that has concerned me about placing the desk where you are saying is that it is “blocking” the entry way. At least the view into it... Is that not an issue?

I feel like the door from the hallway would hit the desk if you put it next to the closet. Sadly, I think if you put the couch on the window wall, the closet might not be fully accessible. Have you tried the couch on the wall where the desk is, and the desk on either the big wall or facing the windows?

@Jess. You're Welcome! It's difficult to get a perfect room and your needs in a small space. For me, placing the desk there, would be fine for these reasons....

    This is a Dual-Purpose Room

    1. Your desk has a light weight feeling to it, it's not bulky, although one with more storage might be better functionally. (which is still ok) Not a lot of choices for you

    2. Because you enter the room moving to the left, that pathway is all clear.

    3. You won't run into a desk at current space, when entering the room

    4. Better use of the space between the closet and doorway, given it's construction

    5. Visually, a better, more inviting floor plan overall

    6. Furniture placements are more aesthetically pleasing (better balance)

    7. Better use of space you have

    8. Sofa & coffee table area are inviting and functional. It won't feel like there is nowhere else to place the sofa in your home

    9. You will 'feel' good about the room and like going in there

    10. The room might even feel larger

I am thinking that the couch could be centered under the window and keep the desk centered on the wall where it is. The problem is that you can't open the closet door, but you could remove the door and place shelving / drawers in that space.

How much work do you do in that room? The monitors look pretty serious, but the space as a whole looks pretty dysfunctional as a work space. The suggestion to take down the closet door is a good one. You can put shelving in there and attractive containers for storage, and keep work stuff handy. If you need a better work space, move the couch under the window and get yourself a proper desk/table to spread out and get stuff done. You’ll have room for a printer/scanner if you do that.

I work 100% from this office, 40 hours a week. I do everything from the computer and my phone. We are pretty much paperless, but I do have the printer for the occasional need. I don’t need much space.

    What happened to the floor?

If you plan to work on this schedule for quite a few more years, and you want guests to be comfortable, consider installing a Murphy bed system. I would certainly want a more substantial desk, and consider wall mounting the computers.

How often do you have guests in the room? Are you tired of the layout or would you like to make changes to the aesthetics of the space as well? Do you have any sort of budget for changes?

I manage a team of telecommuting data analysts and the younger they are the smaller their work space seems to be. The era of the executive desk and lateral file has gone to 500 gigs of storage on your computer, network storage or cloud storage. Many have the lift desks that they can stand and a few have under the desk treadmills and walk while they work and sit on a ball when they lower the desk.
