i am concerned there is no drainage in a birdbath .... its a winter issue ...

you would think i would know where you are by now.. but im not ... what is your winter plan???

It is actually a fountain so there is a hole for drainage. I'm in zone 6b, NY metro region. The hosta would remain in the stone or concrete pot over the winter.

When you transplant a hosta from soil to potting medium, do you rinse off all of the soil or keep as much of the root ball intact as possible?

Ah - so perhaps better to use a pot within the pot, and sink that in the ground or the compost heap over the winter....

Yes, pot in a pot is best. Sink pot into ground for winter. A potting medium with good drainage is important.

or just take the pot with the plant.. and tip it on its side after its dormant ... and put it on the north side of something.. so no winter sun on a black pot .... get it dormant.. keep it dormant.. and dont drown it mid winter ...

even better if its covered in snow all winter ... on its side
