We have had lots of heat and I wonder if I’m watering them when they’re already thirsty. I don’t know because the other trees have not had splitting.

Ive got some fruit splitting too, it usually happens because a plant is dry, then suddenly gets flooded with water. Ive also been getting tons of figs laura. And some lucky bird is too! Nothing I can really do, the decoy owl is not effective lol.

Sorry Bob! Jay, what you say makes sense and is along the lines of what I suspected. Glad you’re enjoying figs as well. I’ve not had too many problems with birds this year. I guess I keep them well fed with my feeders so they’ve not bothered the figs. Those were brown turkey, but I have a few other varieties in my backyard that I may get to taste this year for the first time, although those trees are not as big as the one in the front yard. Enjoy!

There are various reasons that citrus fruit split. Also, splitting is more sever in some varieties than others. Valencia, Hamlin, Navels and Murcotts. have a high tendency to split. While Grapefruit, Dancy, Tangelos and Temple have a very low incidence of splitting. Primarily, splitting is a problem during high temperatures, and during periods of high humidly and rainfall, or hand watering. Thus splitting normally occurs from August through fall. Damage often occurs when trees take up water after a long dry period. Lastly, splitting also can result from low to deficient potassium levels resulting in thin peel that promotes fruit splitting.

There is your answer, pick the one that might be the problem, only you would know. Your weather history might give you a clue.

Thank you Silica! I was hoping you’d also chime in. I think it’s the hand watering after drought. It has not rained here in weeks - at least not a significant rainfall.

Hi Laura I've had the fruit splitting problem in the past usually during very moist summers . What a great idea for Pizza !!!! I can't believe the amount of figs you and Bob are harvesting . I have two trees and not one , I think the pots there in are to small . I think your son will miss your cooking Laura , sure won't take to long before he's home sick .
