Does a contrasting kitchen island have to be the same style cabinet?

We have a 2-level island in the new house, which we don't love (read: hate). We want to replace it with a large one-level island, 1.5 cabinets deep. The problem is the cabinet maker went out of business. We're pretty sure we want the new island to be a contrasting color (perimeter cabinets are white), but need advice: does the style of the cabinet doors for the island need to match the existing cabinet doors? THANKS!

No, and it will be fun choosing a cabinet and color. also, Do a different hard surface for the island.

It doesn't have to be a perfect match, since the change in color will distract the eye anyway. But I'd go with the same general type -- slab or Shaker or whatever -- if possible, unless you're doing something Totally Different (like a repurposed dresser). Similar structure helps the whole cohere.

If you would like it to be the same or very similar, you can ask a local cabinet maker if they can reproduce the door style. I needed a new set of doors for a vanity, took the old, broken doors down to a cabinet maker and he made new ones that fit where the old ones went.
