Back Entrance Coat Room Mudroom Addition Before/After DIY

This is our new back entrance addition that used to be a old enclosed porch that the previous owner took off an old farmhouse and placed on this one. This was once the exterior of the house, so we had the challenge of making it look like an actual room, not an afterthought. We literally took it down and started over, with a slightly smaller footprint. We designed the new space on paper, then hired out the removal of the porch and new framing to a professional, then we took over and did the rest. My husband and I are experienced DIYers.

Our boots used to freeze to the floor here. There was no place for coats, or to sit to put on your shoes. Too many spiders called this room home. Broken single pane windows, sloping floor. Nowhere to put muddy shoes or for guests to hang their coats. Piles of recycling that had nowhere to go.

We fixed ALL of that, added some character & tons of function.

We wanted easy to clean, waterproof, mudproof, dog proof flooring as this room serves as a playspace for the little pooches- so we chose a vinyl fiberfloor. We covered the walls in 4x8 sheets of reclaimed wood look panels, we planked the ceiling with pine and painted it white, added his and hers IKEA wardrobes, a bench with storage for off season shoes, wall coat hooks and a boot tray. We added IKEA bins with flip lids and labelled them for an easy recycling center.

As usual, we realize this won't be everyones cup of tea here, as we all have different tastes. It fits our personalities and style and we love it. This post is to show what you can do on your own if you don't have access to a very large budget- but do have access to determination, imagination and are willing to do most of the work yourself. We aren't looking to make any changes here, just wanted to share a finished project with you all. You can check out much of the rest of our home renos within my profile. We have a couple rooms and some exterior projects left, so watch for those over the next year. We are currently in the middle of painting the exterior, new fencing and some landscaping.
