Additional light

Is it appropriate to place a floor lamp next to a tv console? If so should the lamp hit above or below the height of tv? I don’t see any other option for additional lighting with the layout of this room.

what type of use for the light (to lighten whole room or task lighting) If you have room a sofa table with two lamps would work, I placed a floor based reading lamp behind my sofa which work really well for reading while sitting on my couch (not so much for lighting the entire room)

I love the idea of a table and lamp or floor lamp near the sofa but the way the room is setup there would be a cord running through it if I put a lamp there. I feel there is enough reading light as is but my husband thinks otherwise.

Best lighting for a room should include ambient (ceiling) task (table/floor) and accent (art/uplights) so hubs is right.

It may be worth it to get an electrical socket installed on the floor near the couch.

    I'd like to suggest you

    • shift the sectional to the left
    • add a console table along the staircase and place one or two buffet lamps on the console.
    • There might be room for a floor lamp to the left of the corner fireplace.
    • Move the plant to the right of the TV media cabinet.

Bevs idea is exactly my thoughts. Lighting needs to be where you need it. A tv is not where you need it

Beverly, I'm liking your ideas. Thank you. I may try a lamp near the fireplace. The space between back of the couch and staircase is main path to the hallway from kitchen and I'm worried it would be crowded with a console table there.

In our basement/rec room where there is a TV wall, we found out through trial-&-error that having a lamp on each side of the TV like you are planning worked out great. Test it out for yourself using table lamps you already have to do a lighting mock up and see if you like it.

The basement already has “good” lighting (lots of recessed & some track lighting for highlighting art), we did not have sconces or floor lamps planned, but lamps the on either side of the TV are what everyone prefers. I would have put them on a switch and bought a wider entertainment center if I knew in advance.

My favorite way to do this is not with floor lamps, I would either get a looooong media cabinet and use table lamps like this setup:

    ...or wall sconces.

I think you really should try Bevs idea. Move the sectional closer to the fireplace until you have a good walkway. It does look a little tight even now without anything by the stairs. I would suggest pulling it closer to the fireplace even if you don't add the table.

10" should be easily accommodated. All these tables are less than $150

I’ve shifted the sectional but now it doesn’t line up well with tv console, which is centered on the wall. My question is this, should I leave the tv stand or shift it to line up with the sectional and be off center on the wall?

Not a pro. I think it's fine to have the tv stand line up with the sectional and not centered on the wall. I've seen this mentioned on other posts (particularly in the Kitchen forum) that we tend to like symmetry, but things are only symmetrical from one vantage point. I really like Beverly's idea, and the plant to the right of the tv and stand balances the corner fireplace.

I agree, the plant would look better on the other side but don’t think it would get enough light there. There are two windows and a slider to the left of the fireplace so that’s why it’s there.

Thank you for the awesome idea Beverly. I’m not sure about the lamps and vases, for now I’m just playing around with different ideas.
