I lean more towards greys for my neautral base but I do like the blue. I think you could do a lot with it, using your current rug and changing the color scheme later with accessories if you want to. I do think the blue looks a little muted against the brighter red in the rug. But that could just be my screen.

Someone else will likely give you actual design advice like adding certain things and comment on the rug size and stuff.

We just moved into this new house. Still no pictures on the walls and I have 3 kids between 7 and 11 which is partially why I’m looking for a darker color at this time. Here are a couple of pics of the whole room which is open concept to the kitchen. The red in the carpet actually does have a muted hue to it in person that I’m not sure if it shows up in the photos or on screen. Thanks for your advice!

I like the blue it beats brown and black but why not with kids go navy leather instead it will probably out last that fabric 3x

I actually wanted brown leather. My spouse doesnt want leather. We are looking at Axis II from C&B. (Am I allowed to name names here?). Sales person assured us that if we pick a “Family Friendly” or easy care fabric it would hold up. The red microfiber definitely has seen better days, but is probably 12-14 yrs old. All the things that 3 kids can do to it have been done! Lol. Time for a change.

The blue is a significant up charge over these standard colors.

I like the rug, but it may be too small to adequately work with a sectional. Do you have a dining room where it may fit? You want the sectional well anchored on the rug. At the least I'd want it to slip under the front 1/3 of each side of the sectional with a foot or so extending past the ends of it. Use painter's tape on the floor and tape out both the sectional and rug for the different seating you are considering. With kids, you might just add a second sofa similar to your red one, (even in blue) and eliminate the loveseat. Wait until the 11 year-old is 13 before getting the sectional. It should last until they all graduate and leave home then.

Some people put them only half under the chaise, but I don't like that look. It makes the rug look skimpy to me. Iif you have a big coffee table your arrangement above might look OK. Maybe you could take your rug to the store and play with it. Never know...

Worst case, you don't like it and get a new rug after the sofa comes home. You didn't say if you had a dining area where it might fit under the table.

Is this a room where the 5 of you will be sitting together a good majority of the time? If so, I'd take the whole family to C & B and see how comfortable everyone is on that sectional all at the same time. Basically that corner seat is useless and then the flanking seats usually can have the people sitting in those seats playing kneesy with each other. I've had a larger sectional than the one you are considering along with chairs in the room and when I had people over, the chairs are where the people gravitated first. People do not like to sit next to each other if they can help it is what I've observed.

I had three children at home. We were very comfortable with a three cushion sofa and a two cushion love seat and a small upholstered chair. Someone was usually on the floor or not at home or in their rooms (no TV's there). This worked fine, tedbixby's comments on sectionals are valid. I love the red sofa....have you thought about another red sofa? Leather is cold in winter and sticky in summer; a good Sunbrella-type fabric is great and is easlly kept clean. You also need some table and lamps too.

After seeing the whole place I like the blue more. I think it is better than the other three swatches you put up and would go well with the fireplace and wood beams in the kitchen. Just my opinion. I'm definitely not a designer. I can't even decide what length of sofa to buy for my place lol. I don't plan to have a rug at my place but do like how the grey and white pattern rug that decoenthusiaste posted fits just under the sofa. The red in the rug is not as bright as I originally thought it was.

One other thing. I love navy sofa's but the thing you have to be careful of is that the navy doesn't become black and looking at the color of the swatch on my monitor it appears that it could lean that way. I'm mentioning this because it looks like there may not be much contrast between the sectional and your black island and the two together could look visually uninspiring and become just a big black blob.

I liike the red. Blue art seems more Tahoe than the dark blue. Dark beige/ oatmeal/ putty greige seems good to me.

Crate and Barrel “wheat” for the fabric which looks, on my monitor, to be the color in the border and the accent color in your close up right by the blue sample.

Textured / tough weave could make stains easier to hide... wheat a bit green idk...?

Thanks for the insight on color as well as layout with the rug etc from everyone. Comments from Tedbixby and threers is giving me pause for the sectional vs sofa and love seat.
One thing I love is a sofa with the chaise. Would there be too much in this room for a sofa with chaise, love seat and a stand alone chair? Also, do you recommend matching sofa/love seat combo or change it up?

If you like the idea of a sofa with a chaise as a means to put up your feet rather than eye candy have you considered going with a recliner sofa instead?

I would consider a reclining sofa however the ones I’ve seen looked more like a longer version of a lazy boy which is not the look that I personally like. I admit I haven’t looked very hard for one

You are probably thinking of the big ''ol pillow sofas when you refer to Lazyboy?

Your house looks very nice btw. I think you could do a sofa with right side chaise and a loveseat or maybe even another sofa by the size of your room. I agree the rug is too small for the space, but if you layer it on a bigger natural rug like a jute, that’d be cute. And I do like the blue.

The best thing to do rather than assume what will or won't work is to measure the space and then do a furniture layout to see what works the best and is most functional. I would even blue tape the floor where I want to put the furniture to see if the size is right and if there is enough room to walk around it. I'm thinking that if you want to get another seat in your space, I don't think a chaise will work as you might be able to put a small swivel chair where the right side chaise would be.

“She” is a he, which is why I haven’t done the blue tape thing yet. Getting the kids back to school last week as well as fall sports all starting up again = I haven’t had a chance to map the sofa out yet with blue tape, but its a great suggestion that I will do. Are there any good “room planner” apps that would be good as well?

After being here on Houzz a 1000 yrs, I find that it is better for OP's to measure the space themselves the old fashion way with a tape measure ,draw it out and to scale make your own furniture cut-outs for each piece of furniture. That way you can move them around and get a feel for what will or will not work. Then you can move onto blue taping it. Not only will you know if it works you can determine if the size of furniture you are considering is the right size. From what I've seen if OP's use an app the space looks like it can hold a lot of furniture, which in 99.9% of the cases it can't and without blue taping they usually purchase the wrong size of furniture. And doing it the old fashion way, they usually end up with a different floor plan than what they came up with on the app. This is something you want to make sure is 100% right before you make any purchases and it is so much easier to shop when you know the exact sizes. So if you do find an app just be aware that you might still want to do your own measuring, etc....

That is good advice. Just need to get “on it”. Unfortunately I think the fall sale at the store I was looking at just ended.

Don't worry about "sale" as they will have another one before you know it. While you wait you can get your measurements and thoughts all put together and if the "sale" hasn't happened by the time you are ready, you can go look and if you find something you like, ask them when it is going on sale. Sometimes they will give you a sale price as they want that sale and don't want you to go look elsewhere. If they don't and you don't find anything else you can wait for the sale and then just order it over the phone. I've also found furniture I like that wasn't on sale and then I found what other stores carried that brand and would just call to see what price they would give me as unless it is a floor sample, where ever you purchase it from they are going to have to order it and found that prices from one store to the next could vary. Of course, if it is their own brand you are kind of locked into the price..
