Depends. I may plant closer knowing I will move some later. If I want to plant it and forget it I will plant farther apart than suggested.

I am a type “A”, (anyone surprised?) so, I want to make my garden as full as possible knowing of course I may have to move things around. So like oursteelers above, I tend to ignore the tag. The exception to this is if I am adding a hosta that’s already a good size.

it depends on two thing.. in my estimation ...

how much room you have .. acres vs sq feet ...

as well as the collectors bug ... which is a big problem with a lot of us .. lol ...

e.g. ... lol .. if you have space for 3.. .. and you buy 30 every year.. well ... you gotta jam them in somewhere ... lol ...

but on the other hand.. if you are just scaping a small area ... space them out.. for their ultimate glory ...

mikgag, that's the other thing, accuracy. There are so many variables that play into it. Like with annuals, I never plant at the spacing distance a tag says.
