That hinge is correctly positioned. What you want to do could cause interference with the door casing or prevent the door from opening fully. Stop trying to second guess the professional carpenter.

The mortised door hinges in my home are positioned similar to your photo. My house is a 1886 Victorian so apparently carpenters having been hinging doors this way for awhile.

Patricia, since your a pro, what hinge-type would you recommend for a visually minimal impact, or at least clean look?

I’m an architect but have very little experience with traditional hardware. I’ve always worked with low profile/minimal hardware (think soss, sugatsune, pivot hinges, flush trim, shadow gaps). This is my first project using antique or even ‘normal’ hardware.

I like the elegance of “olive knuckle” hinges but are those limited to cabinetry?

I'm more concerned with the screw selection.

Some hinges are made extra-deep to clear thicker trim systems, like in historic work. The door should be able to swing open flat against the wall without binding on the casing, plinth block,pilasters, what have you.
