Big change! You both have done a nice job. If you don't like the bar stool area, can you fill it in with another lower cabinet?

FYI, I have a pantry wall with a coffee station that has a very convenient pull-out tray with a lip (in case DH spills his coffee water!) that also hold the toaster and blender. Might be something to add to your toaster area, that way you can keep it pulled out while using and until it cools off.

Amazing how much bigger your kitchen looks by finishing the cabinets to the ceiling, and also so much lighter and brighter with the white! Great job.

Skipp - yes, I love my painters tape lol! And later it was filled in with boxes to get an idea of moving around the room. As far as the time budget... last house we owned was a complete remodel, no room/surface left untouched kind of remodel. We did the entire thing ourselves (and by we I mean I said what I wanted and my amazing husband built it on his sabbatical and then weekends.) It took soooooo long to finish that this time around we thought we’d be clever and hire a contractor to do the labor. Long story short, he basically abandoned the job after some personal issues and my husband still had to finish it. We anticipated it would be done within 3 months, but it took a year! Obviously there have been various stages from “totally unusable” to “almost done”. But from demo to done was about a year.

jschrickel - the island countertop is only 26” wide by about 8 1/2 feet long. It sounds really narrow, and I suppose it is. But if you consider that perimeter counters are only typically 25” you can see that it’s actually quite functional. I wanted to be sure the ratio didn’t look awkward and I think it works. It’s definitely pushing it in terms of being too long for the width but I really think it works. And in case you’re wondering about clearance there’s 41” on one side and 42” on the other :)

allison0704 - thanks! Sounds like a cool setup you have! I could fill in with another lower cabinet but it would definitely look after-the-fact unless we got a new back with 4 panels for it. But on the front side it would no longer be symmetrical. We could fake it on the back with 4 same size panels, but not on the front. At the moment I have our homeschool cart rolled under the end, which is actually pretty convenient but I’m unsure if I want it to “live” there permanently. I might get a single backless stool for someone to perch on.

Nice kitchen! I am in the finishing stage of my white kitchen redo right now needing a backsplash, paint and pulls installed. Tell me your: 1) cabinet brand/color, hardwood floor species and what are those backsplash tiles? Thanks!!

B Merrit - we used Barker cabinets in Dover White, hickory hardwoods (handscraped I think it's called because it has kind of a texture in it), the pulls we got on amazon, and the backsplash is just very basic white subway tiles from either Lowes or Home Depot. We basically got a sample of all the white options and I chose the one that I thought looked the best (a tiny bit warm vs stark white) and then it was a matter of digging through all the boxes to find the right color lot etc. The grout is a light gray. Good luck on finishing up your kitchen!

Thanks for all the info @mshutterbug! What is your countertop? I am wondering if my white blinds are going to look odd when they go back up. May have to convert over to your shades. You should post when that's done!

B Merrit - we went with LG Viatera Snow Storm. It was almost identical to Ceasarstone Organic White, and I can’t remember now why I went Viatera over Caesarstone. But I LOVE it! Originally I wanted a marble look alike quartz, but just couldn’t find one that I liked as much as real marble (which I didn’t want because I have 3 kids and a very lived in kitchen.) So I went for what felt more like “inspired by marble” vs “trying to be marble” ;)

(Edited to add: This is not to knock marble look-alikes. I have seen some gorgeous photos of marble look alikes though, so I know it's possible to find one! But ultimately I just wasn't finding one I loved. And I wanted my really white kitchen, even knowing it might go out of style or be considered too "boring" or "stark". People tried to talk me into more color, but more and more I'm just going with my gut on things. And I couldn't be happier with my choices!)

I’ll try to post photos when we get the new shades. As for the white blinds, I think they work fine! I just don’t love ours. I’ll shamelessly share a couple pics of yesterday’s tea party and you can see the white blinds in the background.

B Merrit - I don't mind the questions a bit. I remember being in that stage and had about a million questions. I always appreciated when people would take the time to answer so when I can I like to do the same :)

I love the paint color that we went with... we did the entire downstairs with it, as well as the upstairs hallway because it's visible from downstairs. Of course, as always, test in your own home in various lighting scenarios. It definitely looks different at different times of day, in different rooms, etc. We went with Sherwin Williams 7015 Repose Gray

I see that you used Barker Cabinets. How was your experience with that? Would you use them again/recommend?

My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen and are thinking of using them with the exact same cabinets (shaker in Dover White). We have very similar floors as well. Do you love the color? Any regrets or things you would do differently?

Morgan - I would recommend them. However, I would caution you that it will take a long time. They are upfront with the processing times, so this is not a negative. Just something to be aware of. And you need to take very good notes of your design because as I'm sure you are aware - you assemble the cabinets yourself. So double check, and triple check all your measurements. Make sure you remember things like fillers, etc.

I do love the color! BUT it did make finding a marble-esque countertop tricky. Because of the shade of white I didn't ever find a marble lookalike that I thought worked well. That said, I am very very happy with the countertops I chose. I consider them more "inspired by marble" vs "trying to be marble" :)

It looks amazing!!! Airy and light for sure! The wood open shelves are my favourite feature.

Thanks you guys! We finally got rid of the white blinds. Replaced with woven shades (I think they’re called). They’re cordless and you just push them up or down. The color goes perfectly with the floor, which really warms it up too. I should take a picture.

And the open shelves are probably my favorite part too :) My husband built a matching fireplace mantel too, which is visible from kitchen. So I love it!

@mshutterbug looks great. Another idea for your island is your hubby could do a couple of the wood shelves there...might look cool. You could put a basket on one of the shelves for homeschool stuff. Or stools.

B Merrit - yes I went with the backing on the shades. In our last house I did not get the backing and wished I had. They are not see-through at all, which I like better. I took a quick photo so you can see how they look. I should have taken it so you could see the floor, because the color really matches well with the floor and the floating shelves. It helps warm up all that white. I know it's a bit much for some people haha! A couple people tried to talk me out of it. But I don't regret it one bit. It brightens up the room so much!

I would so appreciate it and thank you so much for the pic. :) We still do not have our blinds back up because we should be painting in the next month or two. Maybe I still have time to switch out my blinds for shades!

B Merrit - sorry for the delay in response! They are levolor and I can’t remember the color name. We got them from Home Depot and it was really the only color I even considered. The rest weren’t close..

I like that you left the space under your island.

Even if you decide to move your home-schooling things away from there, you have the space to place a cart there for materials for another project you or you and your children work on.

Your island is the perfect size to lay out a sewing pattern, do a science or art project, get into some serious baking.

Having a cart below to hold the requisite materials would be perfect.

Even if it is the serving station for holiday dinners, you can get a slightly wider cart without those high sides to hold serving dishes ready to be filled, or dirty dishes ready to go into the dishwasher, etc.

The more that I think about it, that empty space was a brilliant idea!
