defever, I don't know exact measurements, so don't know if it would work, but here is what I am suggesting as far as buffet: Place in center of the wall behind the chairs. Place the chairs at 45 degree angle at ends of, yet in front of the buffet. So, your chairs would be in the position of the first picture you posted, but they would be moved forward, flanking the fireplace. The buffet would be a center backdrop and the drawers would be accessbile. The area would be cozier. Instead of ottomans or recliners, you could by a round ottoman/coffee table Then, if you ever buy a new couch, I would suggest an arced or "eyebrow" couch to go at the other end.

Thank you so much for the advice! I really feel torn between staying with red and going with something a little toned down. So many people act like it's insane to change the color if I mention considering it.. but every year when Spring comes about, I start thinking about it again. I love the idea of gray and white, as I hadn't even thought of it. The sage that you mention, Apple, is something I have been toying with in my mind... but I wonder if it might be too much green? Is there such a thing? The outside has a TON of green landscaping.. would a green house kind of melt into it and disappear? Maybe that's a good thing? Looking back at these photos makes me realize how much nicer everything looked (outside, I have improved the inside) when I first bought it. I have a lot of work to do! I'm going to try playing with the colors in photoshop.

Anytime you have steps, it is always good to have a railing, if not to keep people from the edge, but to help the elderly or infirm or children even, to access the steps more easily. You might appreciate what I am suggesting once you achieve being over 55. BeverlyFLA is correct.
