Having difficulty with scale and layout

Trying to incorporate a large modern chair (very comfy) with our smaller scale mid-century modern furniture. Need help with placement to balance size and scale. The smaller chairs need to be reupholstered. I welcome your suggestion on color/pattern. Also, how can I use pillows to pull the look together? I appreciate your time and assistance in making our tiny space look fabulous. Thank you!

is it possible to take a photo of the couch and comfy chair in the same photo so that we can see your scale concerns?

You bet. Just give me a second to find some muscle to help me.

Thanks Brenda - Hope this helps!

I would put the two small chairs together in a conversational way (angled toward eachother) on one side of the room with a side table between, then the larger chair can go on the oposite side, also with a small side table. I think this would visually group the two smaller chairs to kind of balance things out.

My first thought is to center the couch under the window it is near now. Work the comfy chair over by the sofa as those two look nice together.

I agree with putting the two small chairs together and maybe one of your couch tables could go between them, as you really do not need both with the couch.

Try the pillows you have on the couch now on the two small chairs as a lumbar pillow for them or are they too big? Then have fun and choose an accent color for pillows for the couch. Blue and brown maybe? Some yellow?

The lumbar pillows are a bit big for the small chairs. They feel good on the sofa but maybe a bit long? Are they overpowering on the sofa? I love the pattern but know they don't quite feel right just yet? How can I make them work with the larger chair?

Can you put ONE on the larger chair and leave one on the couch and maybe add two more different ones with it? NO! They do not overpower the sofa....I was just doing some thinking. LOL You did a great job choosing them.

I love the wall the larger chair is on! GREAT color there to play with, too.

Still feels a bit off. My two chairs are crowded. Take one away? Or???? and lamp placement?

I'm a mid century nut. Here's what I would do. Pull the sofa away from the wall, center it on the window.
Put the two small chairs facing straight, not angled with the end table and lamp between them. The big chair scale is not right and it will always be "off" with that too big chair. Pillows are too big as well.

Another option: The sofa is really small scale and it shows against that window. (It's very cool, not knocking it at all). So you could try putting the sofa at an angle in between the two windows. Put the two alike chairs straight and facing the sofa.

Use smaller scale pillows in a rectangle such as image shown here. Take a look at CB2, crate and barrel. west elm and roomandboard.com websites.

Consider a rug to help "anchor" the room.

Love your idea. One problem, the TV is at one end of the room, over the fireplace close to the door wall. My hubby loves the large modern chair. With you idea of angling the sofa, where would you place the larger chair?

Comfy chair looks like a giant compared to other pieces, maybe it is just the angle in pic.

Can you show the rest of the rom where the TV is? Maybe the oversized chair would go there...away from this grouping. Need to see the rest of the room though.

Did you center the sofa on the window? Hard to tell, so wondering. Try moving the lamp to the other end. Gosh, I wish the chairs could center on their window with the other table between them. Any way they can? We will figure out that other chair as I totally understand hubby liking that one.

I am looking again and see the chairs are pretty centered. Will you try moving the lamp between the couch and large chair? Maybe the lamp will break up the scale. Keep the chairs with the table between and we will take another look.

Love all your comments. running to catch a plane but I managed to get another shot of the TV. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Sorry I didn't send it sooner. Thanks for working magic!

Now that I see the position of the tv, I think hubby will REALLY like the chair right where it is! I like what you have started. Maybe both tables would work with the couch to make it bigger and the chairs could use the coffee table for drinks? Guess one would still have access to the table by the couch, too. Just want everyone having a place for a glass!

I think that lamp works there! OK......do I see a tall candle stick by the fireplace? Could it go back in the corner where the lamp was? Please do not miss that plane!!!

Made it! Yes I need something in the corner and yes, it's a tall wrought iron multi candle stick. Will try when I get back next week. What would you tweak in this photo? Is the arrangement okay or? And pillows. This is where I feel it can all be tied together. I can return the ones in the picture. The smaller chairs need new fabric too. What would your vision be?
    last modified: 13 years ago
YES! You made it! I think that candle stick will be perfect in that corner for some height to balance the lamp. AND yes, I think this arrangment DOES work! I did not know those smaller chairs were fabric as they look all wood, just like they match the coffee table. I am seeing a soft grayish blue working in this room.....it will be so nice with your couch and wood and that fireplace wall. Gotta have the gray in with the blue and an exact color is escaping me now....sorry! I say keep those pillows, though, as they work and they did work ok together on the couch, too, but I like how it also FITS the chair. Let hubby decide if he likes it as sometimes moving a pillow every time you sit there is a pain!

I like pattern and I think I would stay with a pattern in that larger chair, too. Try some colored candles on that candle stick and see how they brighten the room. What about a SMALL pattern for the two smaller chairs and maybe a coordinating stripe for the larger chair? Pillows for the couch that tie them all together. So now I am rethinking the pillows you have, too, if you decide to go with a blue/gray or even another color. I am not sure you want to stay with a light color as you already have light with the carpet and walls. Confusing, huh?

I like your basic layout. I would center the sofa to the window and the tables accordingly. I would maybe place the chair at the window and the two chairs opposite the window. Place a folding screen behind the sofa to add some visual bulk to that wall. A floor lamp in the right corner of the sofa wall. A tall tree in the left corner of the sofa wall. One lamp on the other end table. Window treatment panels on both windows will add to the overall scale of the room.

Add the chair color to the sofa will pillows in pretty prints and color. Add a large colorful print fabric for the new upholstery for the chairs.

Love your MCM furnishings! Absolutely gorgeous. You could try angling everything, such as putting your sofa at a gentle angle between the two windows. The two smaller chairs look good together, and the large chair could anchor the two, creating a u-shaped conversation area. Do you feel that your lamp might be a bit on the largish side and overwhelms the room? Or could you get a standard lamp to place between your smaller chairs and thus allow the eye a rest when it travels around the room and yet still perceive a coherence of sorts between the two lamps?

A rug to tie it all together. I would choose the rug first for color and fabric inspiration.

    Lamp is too large.
I think if you move the sofa in center of the window, the balance for the wall is nicer. The chair will fit nicely at the other window. I think.

I think this arrangement is the best you're going to do with the big chair. I would leave the table and lamp on the left of the couch and put a floor lamp between the couch and the big chair. Some geometric drapes and a retro pillow or two...

Now if you really want to have a comfy TV chair that goes with the mid mod theme, try this:

color is needed. I can always place the large chair in another room. It was me never I intended for this space. Hubby just loves its comfort.
