You might consider a gel stain in a darker color. My sister did just that recently and it came out great.

Try stains on the back of a door or the back of a leg so you can see what they do on this wood.

Colors like provincial or special walnut are green toned

Wood will always be warm, so you may be wanting it to be something it isn’t

Gel stain is certainly an option but it almost completely obscures the wood, but does give complete control over the color

Thank you Hallett, great advice! I've done all my floors in Special Walnut, and now I realize why I like it so much! It definitely neutralizes red tones in wood.

Try your sample stains on the inside of a drawer front where no one will notice them.

I actually used a bleaching kit to remove colour out of wood and it gives the raw wood a more even tone natural colour before you apply a new colour stain.

tint a pre-treatment conditioner with a little green acrylic paint. Start with just a little green, and test on the inside of the piece. Then a Jacobean stain has a greenish tint and will counter the red tone. Green is the opposite of red on the color wheel, and that is why people are saying use green.

Question. Im doing another project. I'm removing the stain from a post and beam fir wood.

Could I just use minwax jocobean stain to tone down the red tone that fir wood normally has? Or do I need to do the green acrylic paint prior. I'm trying to eliminate some steps if I can. I haven't sanded these post down yet. Just testing the grit paper to do the job more quickly.

Professional woodworkers use powder tints for such projects. I believe you can order the tinting powder online. My woodworker used the green powder (added to the stain) to make cherry look like walnut. It came out perfectly.
