Winter protection for sedum/stonecrop?

I'm in zone 4b, and planted Autumn Joy Sedum and a creeping sedum this past spring in my yard and they are doing great. I've never had outdoor sedums over a winter here in the Midwest, and I'm wondering what I can do to protect them so they survive the winter? I'd prefer not to dig them up and being them inside as they are quite prolific. Any advice on how too protect them - mulches, etc? Right now they are in bare soil getting full sun and are doing great. But bare soil in our winters sounds like a recipe for death to succulents... help?
