Louvered patio pergola- durability?

Hi, we’re redoing out back yard in Southern California and would love some thoughts on creating shade. I love the modern louvered patio pergolas. The wooden versions are great but I’m worry about fires and upkeep of them (and they are pricey). I’m looking at metal ones, most of which have motorised louvred slats and I worry they will stop working after a couple of years. Does anyone have first hand experience of either? This is my first landscaping project and I’d be so grateful for any advice. Thanks!!
