We are gutting our existing house and doing a full addition & renovation, doubling our square footage. We are framing right now and they will be done framing the roof by Monday.

Regarding siding our contractor gave me same of Alside charter oak Vinyl siding. I like a 6 inch lap siding best but am open to suggestions.

I like the stone, just not on your house. What you have chosen is suited for a modern/contemporary home, but not for one described as a colonial.

6 inch siding is a good compromise between the more popular smaller and larger sizes, but is less suited to a colonial.

As for colors, bring together samples of your stone, siding and roofing. I'm sure there will be obvious choices once they are viewed together.

I'll also suggest eliminating the 2 smaller gables, especially the one inside the larger gable.

And your house is not at all roof heavy.

Thanks for all the advice! I will talk to our architect about the roof. I do love the stone though....we orginally had red brick with white siding and black shutters. However, I don't want to do brick unless it's the whole house and that's not an option. What do you think of metal roofing on the lower skirt roof?

Again, something that doesn't go with the house, and you will see in the following image that I've eliminated it. I want to suggest that materials and design elements should all work together and that first requires choosing a style, or architecture that you like and then building the house around that. The house should appear cohesive instead of a collection of unrelated parts.

It's too late to do most of these changes even if you did like them, but maybe a couple could be done.

My goal with these changes was to move the focus to the main part of the house, and in general, to look less like a 2nd floor addition and more like a wing was added to the left for the garage and living space above.

For a house like this, your eye should naturally settle around the front door. I've moved the 2nd floor windows apart so there is space for trim between them and added a 5th row of lights to the 1st floor windows left of the front door (1st floor windows are generally larger than the windows above).

The roof is of course the big change and shows how it probably would have been built. A house with a flat face like this would not have the front facing gables that are so popular today, but it would have gables on the end instead of a hip.
