I would be sure to store foods carefully until you decide what to do. Since I started using Tupperware tubs to seal my flour for baking, I have not had any problem with bugs. But also be careful with cereal, grains, crackers, etc.

Where did you get them identified? This doesn't sound like proper locations for flour beetles. Did you find any actually IN food?

Do keep all your food (and pet food) super secure, but also get another identification on the beetles. Color me skeptical. :)

If you have a newer cellphone, you can get some pretty good photos of insects, especially dead ones. Drop them in rubbing alcohol or freeze until dead. Get photos of the top, bottom, legs, face, antennae, etc., and compare to online photos of confused or flour beetles. And post them here, for fun.

Could be plaster beetles, common in new construction.

I've read that construction workers just build a house right over the left over trash from their lunches, and that can attract bugs.

Yes provide pictures. If the beetles happen to be around the wood work and you see holes and wood dust on the area, they might be powder post beetles. If that is the case call the exterminator ASAP. Just a guess without pictures.

Sorry guys, I’m just getting around to posting a picture. This is what they look like on a glue trap we placed under the sink. For the most part, they have stopped coming to the pantry and now there is a lot under the sink area. Thanks!

Update - I just noticed there is also some in the bathroom in the basement, which rarely gets used. They are under the sink and around the floor, but they all seem to be dead.

They are beetles and are actually darkish brown.

Of the beetles mentioned above (flour, confused flour, plaster, powder-post), yours are least like flour beetles (tapered antennae and thorax as wide as abdomen) and are most like plaster beetles (knobbed antennae and thorax narrower than abdomen). They are similar enough to powder post beetles to warrant that as a possibility.

Do more research on plaster versus powder post beetles as to where they hang out, moisture requirements, food, etc.

Lock n lock brand plastic storage or hermetically sealed glass jars from bed bath and beyond are great for keeping bugs out of food. hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

We moved into our new construction house 3 years ago same problem with confused flour beetles all over house not in pantry go figure. After regular pest control we reached out to another pest control. They want to use foggers in basement & main level of house & put hanging boxes that release a chemical that’s meant for attic only. He’s going to put a chemical & diamatomaceous earth around floor boards in basement behind the insulation. Told to get heating system cleaned in case they are in there. Apparently they have infested in there due to attraction to a product used. Worth doing even if it’s only 3 years old. Have you found any solutions? I’m freaking out because I found them in my bed. I was my sheets every week & I found another tonight because I check before going to bed & there was another on the fitted sheet. I changed sheets hasn’t been a week yet since they were changed. Find them bathrooms kitchen basement my computer room. Please share if you have found an answer. I’m desperate to get rid of these bugs.

We eventually found that borax worked. We sprinkled it in all cabinets and around the floorboards. We also used peppermint essential oil which we are not sure if that helped or not. Hope this helps you!

Where did you place the borax exactly? Basement? Upstairs? We have two dogs and I know that stuff can be dangerous but willing to try anything that I can. We set off two foggers in the basment & two on the level of our living space. No bugs in sight. Says good for two months so I want to get a plan to kill them if they start up again at some point.

We placed it all around the house, both upstairs and downstairs. Our bugs were mostly in cabinets, so we put it at the base of our cabinets.

They go after nuts, dried fruit and cocoa beans as well so check everything- keep in sealed containers. In regards to flours, there are meal worms and beetles, thus; why most people sieve it ( not just to get rid of lumps), try not to store for long periods of time unless you use it regularly. The insects can come in the packaging from the store, just take a peek at the bottom of the package when buying. Once home sieve it and store it. Also check cereal boxes, dried fruit packets etc.

Jaime did the confused flour beetles return? We just put boric acid in the walls through electric sockets with a duster, also around the perimeter of the basement and trying to figure out how to treat the attic, maybe if we can get the boric acid into the eaves of the attic. We still have these red flour beetles and confused flour beetles. We have had this problem since buying this house as new construction 7 years ago. Since applying the boric acid into the walls we have not seen any bugs. We will see when the cycling is due again. If you got rid of them please let me know if you did anything else since you responded to me 4 years ago or was your problem resolved.
