That's a lot of tile. Either will look fine, but sometimes it's not the greatest idea to make a grand statement in a small space. So how large a space is it, how far does it extend on the other side of that wall, and what color subway tile are you planning to use?

You could do either way. Are you getting uppers there next to the fridge over the lower cabinets? What type of hood? Post more pics.

here is the conceptual design. the hood will be a canopy stainless steel design. the subway tile will be cream color glass with bright white grout. if I do go to the right of the fridge, should the tile go all the to the corner with edge trim?

You can’t really go wrong either way, but it is a lot of tile, and to the right of the fridge is another room that is not really kitchen, if I’m seeing this correctly. I think the whole tile wall would be less imposing on the entire space if you just stop at the lower ceiling height and stop where the fridge ends for the right hand side. Leaving a little untitled space above and to the right of the fridge will frame the kitchen vs. non-kitchen space.

But again, either will be fine.
