colour question!

We’re updating our bathroom. I was hoping to replace the wallpaper and change the colour of the vanity without replacing it.

My problem is all the trim and the doors are painted the same colour as the vanity. Do I need to keep that?

What would you do to make this bathroom beautiful.

You could leave the wallpaper and paint the vanity the same background as the wallpaper.

Two new mirrors, hardware and faucets would be in order.

Or, you could change the wallpaper, mirrors and hardware and leave all paint as it.

These papers are Performance papers from Thibaut:

I think the vanity would be beautiful in a medium olive green, just darker than the leaves in the wallpaper, and would still coordinate with all your trim.

Thank you so much for your opinions.

One issue- the wallpaper behind the vanity is still intact but in other areas where we built a separation wall, there is no wallpaper.
Would you paint the walls the same colour that you paint the vanity? Or a colour closer to the wallpaper?

I would keep the walls light. You can try to match the background color of the wallpaper, or even a lighter version of that, and keep the darker color on just the vanity.

Certainly a strange mix of tropical/Asian wallpaper and Italianate styling on the vanity. What color is the trim in the rest of the house? It wouldn't be out of line to unify that and have the vanity be different. You might paint it to match the stone inset in the shower. Upgrade the pulls too.

Decoenthusiasts - you’re comment made me laugh out loud. I’m renovating my grandfather’s home. He was an Italian immigrant who travelled Asia extensively. You guessed the “strange” style absolutely perfectly. Is there a type of wallpaper you’d consider replacing this with?

I'm not familiar with wp at all. Perhaps others will have a suggestion and can help you out. What did you think about painting it to match the stones? Is that black?

I like the idea of painting it to match the stones. They are “tiger eye” a combo of black/brown. I just can’t imagine what I’d then do with the walls. I struggle with design ALOT.

The stones on the shower floor and trim are so very much clashing with the Italianate (thanks for the diagnosis, Decoenthusiaste!) vanity that I would suggest doing new doors and drawer fronts on the vanity. Slab front to go with the modern stone look. It will seem like your vanity is all new. I would also paint for now, getting used to the new look.

Can we see a close up of the "tigereye" color tiles? Is the shower tile stark white? How well does it go with the creams and sandy color of the floor tile and counter? It looks like you are going to be trying to find a wall color and vanity color that will make the two different colors of the tiles look good together. I would say a blue or green on the walls is safer than trying to find a cream or white that goes with both. Maybe you can use the tigereye color on the vanity?

I'm not sure painting the vanity will help. I tried a few colors on it and most draw attention to the yellow counter top

The right shade of brown would work as it is in the same tone.

    Here is olive green

    White seems the worst

. Change the mirrors and the lights. Paint the wood trim around the shower window.Match it to the wall, whatever color you decide on.

If you replace wallpaper I would match the background color to the counter top.

I like the vanity. It is so different to what I usually see.

These ideas are all so fantastic. Thank you for the visual of the vanity in all white. That was very helpful to see how yellow it made the counter appear. Here are more photos of the bathroom to better see the “tiger eye”. As for the shower tile, it’s a cream colour.

You can see in these pictures that the bathroom is a SERIOUS work in progress.

Maybe the vanity could be grey or celadon green?

Your Grandfather had great taste and understood quality. If you want cookie cutter, this room is not it. But if you want sophisticated style and quality, you can trust his vision. The "paint everything grey" fad is over. The vanity might work in grey; I have not done a visual on it. But it works fine the way that it is. It's a quality piece, that is timeless - hardware and all - and it works with the floor, etc., as it is. The only thing I would change are light fixtures over the mirrors. That would be sufficient to upgrade the space. I might also change the faucets, and if you wanted to tie that in with the stone, and hardware, you could go dark on the faucets. I like the wallpaper, also, it's obviously quality paper, is elegant, and the combination of influences is interesting. The tiger eye is a statement, as well as a powerful stone,.energy-wise - and it also works in the design.

It comes down to taste and style, and you can do any number of things with the room; but you won't get any better than what your Grandfather did. Different maybe. Nice, maybe. But not better.

    Best Wishes.

I still think deep chocolaty black to work with the stones will be dramatic, with or without wallpaper.

Freedomplace- I appreciate your input more than you know. I truly believe his vision was beautiful. The quality of the items he used is next to impossible to find now a days. My problem is that during renovations a lot of the paper was damaged (other than the wall behind the mirrors). Would you say I could paint the remaining walls to match the wallpaper?

My pleasure. Definitely, you could have a wallpaper accent wall with paper on mirror wall and paint the rest to match/complement.

Here's wallpaper accent wall in small powder room.

You can look here on Houzz and also Google 'wallpaper accent wall(s)'. Tons of pictures, etc. Love the idea of his wallpaper for a feature wall, would showcase it even more - an 'art' wall. All the best! :)

Yes, match the color of the wallpaper background for remaining walls. Unless you really want new wallpaper.
