Lighting Help - Shadows on the Ceiling

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi there. My husband just installed two beautiful pendants in the hallway. But they cast huge shadows on the ceiling - see picture. Anything we can do to minimize or prevent the shadows? Thanks!

Looks quite pretty. But perhaps you need warmer bulbs. Looks like LEDs at 4000 lumens. Try changing bulbs. I would try incandescent bulbs. See what they do. A dimmer on your switch would help. But if they are LEDs get ones that are designed for dimmers.

Those shadows are on the wall, not the ceiling. Sheesh. You think we don't know the difference between the two? What kind of rubes do you think we are?

One quick question: How do you get the light to stick out from the wall like that? Is the chain welded?

The bulbs are too, too cold, get warmer ones, large and frosted. How many bulbs are there? That shadow is awfully sharp. You might be able to get a diffuser cut to lay on top of the light--make it clear and textured.

Great suggestions from wdcruise, but this is the nature of crystal light fixtures. They make your foyer look like an amusement park fun house

Unless you reduce the bulb wattage to something like a nightlight which would simulate candlelight) you are going to have those terrible patterns on the walls. I find the whole appearance distracting and would replace the light fixtures.

    The photo was obviously sideways.

    Hi there.

Thanks for the suggestions -- I am going to try different bulbs and see how they work out. It took a while for me to settle on these pendants -- simple but pretty (in my opinion). I apologize that the original picture was sideways -- I am technologically-challenged and it took a bit to (even) just upload the picture -- should have asked my kids to do it - ha!

    Thanks again!

IMO the wrong light fixture if you don’t want shadows on the ceiling don’t get a fixture that shines up on the ceiling and crystals will alwys refract the light no different bulb will help that.

Photos can be misleading, of course, but it appears somewhat bright. You might want to try a dimmer. I've used the EATON SI06P with success.

Hi Susan. My husband bought LED, soft white, 300 lumens.
