Forsythia cuttings

A couple of months ago I took some forsythia cuttings and put them in water on my windowsill. Much to my surprise they sat there and didn't do anything. About 2 weeks ago I decided to give up on them. Then I discovered 2 that were finally sprouting roots. I planted those two in pots. Now I see several more finally showing roots.

But my problem is, It's late September, I'm in upper Michigan, zone 4. Isn't it too late to plant these outside? I do have a coldframe, should I plant them in there?
