I don't know what a "remodeling" person is.

I just finished a remodel which included my guest/powder room as well as master and kitchen - actually it was a complete gut remodel.

I used a designer but prior to our first meeting I spent a lot of time on the internet looking at pictures of bathrooms (and other rooms). If I saw one I liked, I saved the picture without giving it much thought - just very instinctive reaction.

I then showed my inspiration photos to my designer and also talked about what styles I liked in general - what I was aiming for etc. She then translated my inspiration photos and design preferences which we discussed and tweaked.

Although lots of pictures were all over the place, there were certain elements that seemed to be cohesive. My bathroom doesn't really look exactly like any of my inspiration photos but I like it and it does reflect my aesthetics or at least a portion of it.

Not sure if this answers your question but the first thing to determine and discuss is the style - and of course budget. A good designer can help you realize your aesthetics within a "reasonable" budget and let you know whether your budget is reasonable.

Without knowing what a "remodeling" person is, I can only say that a contractor is not generally the person who provides the aesthetic vision and even a true designer doesn't design in a vacuum but requires input from you. Otherwise you are going to wind up with the most ubiquitous bland remodel since a designer isn't a mind reader. You supply the vision and the designer using his/her talents translates that vision and the GC actually builds the vision using the specifications and designs supplied by the designer.
