Is this a horsefly?

It reminded me of the big black horseflies I have seen around. It was a little smaller, maybe 15mm. The images I have found all have clear wings, like the banded brown horsefly. This one did not. It didn’t stick around for me to get pictures from the side to see the body.

That is a good-lookin' fly, right?

Compare the wing venation to the Tabanidae--I can't tell for sure but you probably have better eyes (and computer) than I do. Looks suspicious.

It is good looking! The opaque wings have been throwing me off looking at images. It’s been so dry, as soon as I turn on the water hose, all kinds of critters are coming.

Yes, it is indeed a horsefly.

My guess is Tabanus sulcifrons or Tabanus calens.
