Above a sink, better to use a non-porous medium so that it doesn't stain or isn't easily combustible.

I'd start with inexpensive shades from a Big Box store and see how they work for you. Also consider how to get some shade with some outside landscaping.

I cannot imagine how one loads that dishwasher where it is located! Talk about awful planning!

I agree about the dishwasher. I am going to have to redo that entire kitchen at some point in the near future. There is only one drawer. Thanks for the input.

Looks like you have a nice view into the woods/trees. Do you need privacy at all? I'd look at a remote controlled outdoor mounted sun shade that you could lower when needed for sun control and still see through it at your view. Then it could be raised when the sun's not so intense. Then you could do a faux roman shade with a nice fabric for the top of the window to keep your view and the natural light in the kitchen.
