Subzero Integrated column over aggressive closing issue

So we have 30 inch integrated columns in a new build.

The freezer works fine - closes at a reasonable rate from anywhere less than 75 degrees open or so. The refrigerator wants to self close from anywhere up to 120 degrees. We have had the install people return (twice) and 2 different authorized repair people come.

The last one did remove stops from the hinges that were supposed to be removed from install. We have had the hinges replaced. And the latest answer from the Subzero engineers (through a repair man) is that "it is supposed to work that way".

The freezer doesn't of course and they offer no explanation on that. No Subzero engineer has ever been out to our house of course. And Subzero has no mechanism for end users to talk with the engineers either so it is unclear how the description is getting conveyed.

So anyone else have this issue? Doesn't help that we went to a open house nearby with Thermador columns and they were perfect.

Which raises another question - has anyone successfully gotten Subzero to buyback their product?

Is the fridge leveled correctly? Verify all directions. That would be the first thing to check as it can affect how the door operates.

Have you gone to a showroom and compared your fridge to the one in the showroom. If they do behave differently, maybe you could film the two appliances and send that video to SubZero for comparison.

From your description, I have a hard time actually understanding your problem. So, maybe the SZ rep has the same difficulty? Also, I doubt that buyback would be necessary. This sounds like something that should be adjustable.

Assuming that your refrigerator is the IC-30R for which this is the installation guide, I'd recommend you follow M's guidance and make sure the appliance is level to the floor and not to the surrounding cabinets (page 10). Also, page 18 states that the standard door stop is 105 degrees but that it can be reduced to 90. If it is reduced to 90, does the door still slam shut? (No mention of 120-degree opening.)

The manufacturer of my refrigerator was so convinced of the capabilities of human beings that it required them to close the doors of its refrigerators themselves. I feel so good about myself when I do it that I reward myself with a cookie!

The leveling was our first assumption. Which is why we had the install crew come twice. Different crew the second time. The company we bought from has 3 showrooms in the area - a reasonably big operation. Doing custom builds and high end renos. They move a good amount of Subzeros.

One of our next plans was to go to a showroom to find one. But here is the big variable - custom panels would be different and the fridge would have nothing in the door (well, usually). But - it was definitely the next step.

It is certainly possible we are talking about 105 degrees vs 120. But the door always opened above 90 - it just opened even further after they took the stops out. Taking the stops out did make it easier to get it to stay open.

Kaseki- That is what ours does - it will stay put after 90 degrees if you are gentle and hold it there for a sec. But it is the aggressiveness at the other times that we don't like. And Thermador doesn't do this (and neither does our freezer).

Our last subzero (2008 48in side by side) did not do this. It had an alarm if you left the door open. It was built-in and not integrated.

But the story has a happy ending (for now). I installed a gas strut that we had left over from the cabinet install. The kind they use for vertically opening cabinets doors - ironically the ones above the fridge. The strut tries to hold the door open. So now the door will stay put at 60 degrees or so but will self close below 60. As my 9 yo said - now it is just like the freezer. The strut runs from the panel to the cabinet above - ie wood to wood and not attached to the fridge at all. There is a plastic cover that had to be removed. Yes - you can see some wires if you are really tall (with the door open). I could cut the plastic cover and reinstall but not worth it. Literally took 30 min once we figured out to do it. Have spent over 10 hours with various install/subzero repair folks and on the phone with subzero. Just put the artichoke hearts and capers back in the door - not that taking everything out helped all that much.

wdccruise - Sounds like a lot of cookies. You shouldn't eat that many cookies. Bet your fridge has an alarm if you don't comply - the manufacturer knows that people are imperfect door closers.

Nice solution! I was going to suggest looking at the hinges for a point where greater friction might be added, but I think your choice leaves less to guesswork and experimentation.

Lots of cookies but not because I didn't close the refrigerator door! No alarm but I did leave it ajar once.

Hi @David Cary! We just had 36" columns installed in our house. I tested them yesterday. We do not have an aggressive close on either. Both want to close if opened less than 90*. If I open it and hold it at 90* or greater, the doors will stay open. I'd probably call SZ again and explain. Did any of the service techs comment when they were at your house?

Update: Went to Parade of Homes house that had 36 inch subzero columns. They autoclosed like ours. The freezer was a bit more aggressive than the fridge.

So it seems like the "fault" is that our expectations are not lined up with Subzero's. Subzero columns auto close and that is a feature to some and endless frustration to others.

My suggestion - Subzero should put an adjustment in since different people want different things. Otherwise, buy Thermador if you want your doors to stay open. Yes you can get the subs to stay open if you go past 90 and hold there for a sec. And many probably find that acceptable. But since everyone wants somethig different - an adjustment is appropriate at this price point.

Unlike my Perlicks which have a fairly simple ferrule scheme on their lower hinges to self close the doors, one which could be modified easily or replaced with an optional alternate, my SZ632 has a fairly complex lower hinge assembly. I have not examined it with care, so I don't know how it works, but it might not be practical for SZ to modify so that it could be adjustable. A different hinge might be needed that doesn't self close.
