Nickel doesn’t rust any more than stainless does. Bottom of the barrel quality materials come from box stores. Go to a local glass supplier and have them install a quality door. One with a clean glass treatment. And no fake nickel anywhere.

Stainless can have corrosion issues depending on media it is in contact with. This could be a low alloyed grade. One possible solution is to buff and hope that the stainless re-passivates..

That is really terrible for it to have corroded in that manner after a relatively short period of time. When I remodeled, the metal had corroded on the shower frame but that was on a metal frame that had been installed in 1965.

I would attempt to get some kind of refund from Home Depot because it is not "normal" for any metal to perform so poorly when it is being used in the manner for which it is intended. With consumer goods there is always a warranty of merchantability which means that the item is "fit" to be sold.

In terms of replacing it, I agree that the best way to proceed is to get a higher quality product which should not become pitted.

I recently remodeled and had Showerguard glass used and I have absolutely no streaking or film and I do NOT squeegee or dry after each shower. Since you have no protection you should first get the scum off the glass - I would imagine there are glass cleaners that would completely get the scum off. After it is clean you are going to need to squeegee the shower each time it is used. You should also ONLY use liquid shower soap as bar soaps have ingredients that cause scum to build up versus liquid shower which doesn't cause scum especially when you squeegee to get rid of anything that might streak.

If they won't refund your money or give you a reasonable adjustment, I would clean the rust off with a product meant for removing rust on metal (see below), then I would sand lightly and paint with a product like rustoleum. You can probably get a similar finish to what is there.

There are other products called bio-clean, but be sure it's this one. I have only used the product in the tub, but they also have it in jugs - I just can't vouch for that, whether it's the same or not. On their website, you can get free samples (scroll down to the 1 oz pouch) or if you have an Ace Hardware, they usually have free samples. That's how I discovered it.

Yes, can't hurt to get both involved.

Home Depot will only return something within 90 days of purchase. After that, the manufacturer warranty is in effect, and you deal with the manufacturer. Even if it were within 90 days, it would have to be uninstalled and returned to the store for a refund.

Dreamline offers a Limited lifetime warranty. The requirements for a warranty begin with you must have the original sales slip. And you must have hired a professional to install. No DIY installs. And if you’ve used any acidic cleaners instead of pH neutral ones, you voided your warranty. If they decide to allow a claim, they will send you new parts, and the warranty is fulfilled. And it’s over with. They don’t warrant the new warranty replacement parts. Nor do they arrange for installation, or cover anything else.

Its a virtually useless and unenforceable warranty. Which is yet another reason for a local glass shop to do the job. A local

point of contact and install person is priceless.
