Help with potted evergreen

Hi there,

im looking for a potted evergreen that I can put next to my back door to somewhat cover my electrical meter. As you can see in the picture, it’s something that would have to fit in that pot that I have on the step.

What are some some good options for potted evergreens that will last for years in a pot. The big box stores usually sell arborvitae and spruce. Thanks for your help!

Need to know your geographic location. In many parts of the country, a potted plant will not survive the winter outside. Also, how much direct sunlight does the area receive? And that pot is likely too small for something tall enough to hide the meter......can you provide the dimensions?

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) I'm located in NY (Long Island). That door faces east and the area receives some direct morning sunlight for a few hours. The pot in the picture is about 9 inches tall with a diameter of 12 inches at the top. The step is about 11 inches wide so I would need a pot where the bottom diameter is no larger than that.

Long Island has a pretty mild climate........you might just get by without any winter protection. I'd try something very tough like a yew or aucuba. At least for a season. Both will grow large enough to outgrow that container after a single season and need either up potting or root pruning.

And use the largest container that will fit that situation.

Is there anything that wint outgrow its container so quickly?

Not in that container and of sufficient height to be a useful screen. An artificial boxwood topiary could work.

in other words.. for the height you want ... it will have to be a good sized tree/plant ... which will require a bigger pot ...

you might consider some bird netting.. and grow something like morning glory around the corner in mother earth ... or maybe a clematis ....

it would be sort of a free form trellis ....

Picture a top bigger than the electrical feature coming out of that small pot - using that same pot for this is just not do-able.

Put instead a box or tub where the shoes are and use it to house something that will cover the wall corner - a good idea anyway - and the utilities both.
