Leveling in even flooring

We have two different flooring types in our kitchen and dining room. We want to cover the exsisting flooring with floating vinyl flooring, resulting in both rooms having the same flooring. The problem is the the dining room flooring is slightly hirer. Is there any way to make the heights match?

Remove everything down to the subfloor and start over.

Add a layer of whatever thickness to the kitchen.

I like the remove everything. That way you are not playing the "Why are my counters so low? And why can't I remove the dishwasher?" game.

Vinyl MUST HAVE perfectly flat surface. If EITHER floors have a pattern (like tiles with grout), then you must get rid of the pattern (cover the tiles in cement or rip them out). If you have an engineered hardwood with bevelled edges (valleys between each plank) then you must cover them in floor patch (lots of sanding!!!!!!) and then you can lay the vinyl.

Whew! You might as well do it right and remove everything and start over. It's the right way to do it...and possibly the cheapest.
