You sure it isn't velvet? It was used in silver boxes.

It’s all gone. If velvet is the best material I can buy that at the fabric store I suppose. Is there any special type of velvet? Also What type of adhesive?

If the latter a reversible glue is preferable, as someone may need to replace the felt again in the future. I'd use hot hide glue, you can also use liquid hide glue. it will soften with heat and moisture-- steam or hot water, making future replacement easy.

Hide glue would also be good for adhering felt to a metal box.

I buy felt from Organ Supply in Erie PA, but I think they only sell to the trade. It comes in a wide range of thicknesses and a limited range of colors from them. You probably want a good quality, relatively thin, woven wool felt for this. Sorry I can't suggest a great source.

I would use the average velvet from the fabric store. No crushed or embossed velvet. Lighter weight would be easier to line the box with. I've sewn with velvet, but never lined a box. Glue? I did line a clam shell once with velvet (long story ).

Does it appear to have been lined? While many boxes did have lining some just used the cloth or bags that you can buy at Amazon. Some also had divided compartments that were lined and lifted out, Of course back when your box was new nothing was from Amazon. If you have a shop that sells silver they may know of a source in your area.

Thanks! Yes it does appear to have been lined because I’m having to scrape off little bits of lining and glue from the inside surface.

If it's a box for storing silver, it probably had the silver tarnish cloth glued in it. I don't believe I've seen on that doesn't have it. Google it -- I ordered some once.

Yes, use the tarnish cloth. I got some online but I don't remember where...it's flannelyfeltish. :)

Hard to be sure as we don't see a photo, but is it what was called a cutlery canteen? The "flannel-like fabric" is woven felt. Wool cloth is first woven and then felted for a stronger, more supple material than the more common amorphous felt.

The anti-tarnish material is better added to the box separately, as its ability to absorb sulfur compounds in the air is limited and it will "wear out" in a few years, long before the box will need refurbishment again.

Anti-tarnish silver cloth, a/k/a Pacific Cloth, is sold by the yard at larger fabric stores.

The type of cloth is sold under several names and by several brands so if you have a favorite brand please say why. More importantly if you have tried several and like one brand over the other explain.

I know of three or four different types used to help prevent tarnish. High nap. Low nap. Medium nap. One that has no nap but is used more as a polishing cloth than storage.
