Cost to move two windows?

7 years ago

How much would it cost to move two windows? The entire second floor is the master bedroom and these are the only two windows. The place that they currently are is directly a crossed from where I would put my bed. The windows are brand new and I would reuse them. The exterior of the home is vinyl siding. I just want to seperste the windows 6 or more feet. Its just an idea, but if it’s not too expensive I would like to have it done. Any advice is greatly appreciate!

    Construction costs vary geographically. Follow PPF.'s direction.

    Well...let's see what's required:

    --Demolition, and salvage the two windows;

    --Create new framing with window openings, sheathing, house wrap and flashing;

    --Install existing windows (if they were salvagable);

    --Install new siding and miscellaneous;

    --Install and finish interior gypsum board;

    --Clean up

    Exterior work: 2 men @ 5days (min) @ $1,000/day/man = $10,000

    Interior work (dry wall and painting): 2 men @ 3 days @ $1,000/day/man = $6,000

    Total $16,000 more or less. This assumes there's no electrical, plumbing or HVAC that would be affected.

    Caution: This is using the SWAG factor.

    It isn't just moving the windows it's what you must to to the framing and exterior of your home to accomplish that. If you try to go cheap -- if you get a handyman rather than an actual pro, you could end up with a damaged exterior.

    If the issue is sunlight or privacy, consider changing the window treatments to some that have more light control and/or privacy instead moving the windows.

    Do get a price from a reputable pro for the swap AND, while you're at it, get a price just for adding two new windows where you want two windows to be, leaving the others in place.

    As odd as this sounds, you might actually be better served cost wise just having two additional windows installed where you want two windows (rather than ripping out the existing windows). Then you could have the option to cover the two original windows on the inside. Black shades or black roofing felt could make the windows appear from the exterior to be in a dark room. Then you could cover the original windows with a pair of shelving units with backs -- with or without hinges to open them to see the windows.

    Why would you eliminate windows because they are across from your bed? Nothing nicer than looking outside from bed, imo. If the light bothers you, get room darkening shades. If you like looking outside from bed, but need to darken the room so you can sleep, get room darkening shades with a remote control so you can open/close them from bed.

    If you want more light or a different view, just add windows where you want them.

    Ask whatever contractor installed the windows for a quote. Whoever did the initial work knows the details and should be able to give you a ballpark figure quickly. Then you can pursue an actual estimate if you are still interested.

    Note: I did try to look it up but what I found for SWAG didn't seem to fit:

    Don’t forget permit cost, maybe engineering cost for headers sizing and if the siding can be matched . It’s a fairly simple job, but a huge headache to get all the details ironed out. Many contractors would pass on this job due to the headache to work ratio.

    Those 2 windows would look silly 6’ apart so you would need 2 more windows to look right.BTW we also need to see the space .

    suezbell's idea to just add windows is best and most cost effective. And nobody here can tell you what it will cost, only local contractors can do that.
