I'd do art, myself. Never been much of a fan of mirrors in dining rooms - looking at myself or the opposite wall is much less interesting than looking at a good piece of art. I think the bookshelf idea would overwhelm a relatively small space. Just my totally non pro opinion ;)

Art, for sure, but nothing's gonna look great as long as you have a dog crate there.

And unless your dining room is actually bright yellow, I would suggest changing your light bulbs to something in the 4000 - 5000°K range.

How about a narrow sideboard for storage and to ground the wall? Art could also be added if needed.

I'd make a statement with an oversized piece of art since you don't really have room for anything else in the room.

I like the idea of oversize art as suggested by groveraxle. Is there somewhere else the doggie crate can go??

Thanks everyone! Our place is pretty small, and unfortunately we love Virgil so the crate stays. But I do like the look of the oversized art.

With a neutral area, you might find a large rug could enlarge the room, and art wouldn't have to be as large I think.... and then doggie has room for his crate, sort of camoflauged on it...

So here’s a visual that’s a little out there...add in bookshelves, no deeper than want you need for the actual books. Fill the space...I mean...FILL THE SPACE. KEEP THE CRATE IF THATS WHERE IT WORKS BEST, WE MAKE CONCESSIONS FOR OUR FURKIDS. My personality is dark and cluttered and that’s the way I’d go in that smaller space if it where me. If you like clean and simple, do a big piece of art and accommodate Virgil stylishly. No matter your approach, be committed and go 1 00%.

I vote large piece of art. Maybe this won’t work depending on how your rooms connect but can you pull the crate forward more so you can better center the table?

I love that colorful pop and it looks great with your furniture. Can’t tell from the photo angle if it’s centered with the wall, centered with the light fixture? Ideally both are in the center. Your hanging plant will allow you to cheat a little on the exact measurements. Nice change!

I’d prefer to see it to the right and centered on the wall. You will not have to repair the wall as the hole will be covered by the artwork. Besides, there are many do it yourself patching techniques that can be used. The hole can’t be that big can it??
