Bay Window HELP!

Hi,

We are in the process of getting new garage doors, siding, windows, lights and taking out the brick arch over the entry porch-and a whole lot more! I would love to take out this bay window (NOT structural) and replace with a large flat modern window or a few rectangle long skinny windows? Would love your thoughts, ideas and opinions! THANK YOU!

I'm by no means an expert and don't know what you imagine by "large flat modern window or a few rectangle long skinny windows" but it seems to me that the problem with the current three windows is that they are too small. If the center picture window were replaced with wider dual casements (like those to the left of the front door) and the skinny windows were each replaced with wider single casements, the whole bay window would look a lot better and more consistent with the rest of the house. Also, perhaps you could either paint or add brick or something to make the bay less prominent.

If I understand the question, you want to remove the bay projection walls and rebuild the front of the house so it is in plane with the rest of the front so you can have new windows in a more modern style. It looks like you will have to remove the roof part of the bay window and rebuild the roof, so this is structural. There is no way to flatten the front of the house without addressing the roof over the bay window.

The roof is BTW part of the structure so will need to be addressed I also dislike that bay and this is a duplicate post too and nor sure why you posted it at all/

Yes, removing the brick arch and the bay window will updated the house in a nice way (it screams 90's right now)! But you need to talk to a contractor and an architect to do it right, and have a real plan for the end result. Lovely home otherwise :)

Thx! Yep- we’ve had a structural engineer come out. Yes-I have another post on the design/brick, siding, color for garage doors. Was now wanting to hone in on the bay window and get feedback-thank you!

We have that same type of window in the front of our home and I absolutely hate it! We just ordered all Anderson windows in black with inside top grills.... so we pretty much just sucked in the window for looks. Large window in the center with two skinnier windows on the sides with inside grills, crank out. Excited for the change!!

I don’t see how getting rid of the bay window would be an improvement, it’s one of the only things acting as a counterbalance to your projecting and prominent garage. If it were me, I would think of not having white garage doors. Unless the bay has structural issues. I don’t see this house ever becoming sleek and modern, it is what it is.

    I sort of agree with J Williams...it feels a”

Like you are removing the personality of the home with your changes..as well a throwing the balance off a little

While I think the three windows on the bay are too small, I wonder about the effect of the bay on the room's appeal. I have a four-window bay in my dining room and it certainly makes that room more pleasant to sit in. (The garages are very prominent but paint would fix that, wouldn't it?)

It may be the stark white that is the problem...it draws the eye first and accentuates the feature that you don’t seem to like...if you haven’t ordered your garage doors i would consider a darker richer color for both the bay window and garage doors...

I agree.. taking away the bay doesn’t benefit the house.

To address window style: no to long skinny windows. A big picture window instead.

    Big front porch?

You've got a cute single story house with front garage. Perhaps the bay window isn't your style, but it adds curb appeal and without it, your home will look like an ordinary So Cal home circa 1960s-. my childhood home looked just like that, except only 2-car garage.

It reminds me of a gingerbread house with white icing. Show your style with the interior. Do what you want to the inside it doesn't have to repeat the outside.

Add some landscaping to the walkway to make it stand apart from the neighbors.

It looks like it would cost a lot to change the windows. If you change the siding material/color on the bay to match what you are planning for the garage it should add some visual symmetry to the house. I'd also tie in the rest of the trim.

IMO the color of the brick will always scream traditional colonial. Maybe consider coloring all the brick white with black accents. That will take the attention away from the bay & arches.

Hey Beverly! Yes- that’s been a consideration but I hear so many negative reviews. If this, lime wash? :) and thank you for all your ideas- love them!
