The best option is to have the stairs match the 'public' areas of the house. That is to say, the area where guests are most likely going to be. That gives the ever-so-important illusion that all the wood floors match (even though they do not).

Having two different wood floors on two different levels is well accepted in the design industry as well as with the resale market.

Yes I can see where you are going with this. You can use a colour that is 1-2 steps darker than what you have. That is a very handsome look.

I'm assuming the 'vertical grain' that you are referring to are the dark brown doors on the bookcase? You will get a 'vertical grain' on your stairs because that's how the wood will be cut/laid on the stair. It is the stain that will make it handsome.

Your wood floors look to be factory finished product. It would be insanely difficult to match them so you might as well go darker (just 2 steps = very handsome) in the same colour family.

What is on your stairs right now? Can you load photos?

IMO the stairs should be the same as the flooring on the main floor and then if you want something different on the upper floor that is where you make the change. Those spindles are not doing anything for the modern look you want so why not do that are a matal and glass railing there.
