Please HELP with my 2 year old bedroom?? Oak Trim ugh??

Hi,

I am totally new to this discussion site and this is my first post. I have been trying to decorate my little girls bedroom for a while now and I'm totally clueless on what to do. The room is on a smaller side, so I have decided that I will get her a twin bed (possible trundle). I'm posting an piece of art that I got for her and that is my inspiration for the room (decor/colors). If you were to have a clean slate what would you do?
I can't change the oak trim or carpet but everything else is ok. I'm trying to create a peaceful, serene and calm room that will last her for a while.

Please help me:
-what color should i do for the walls? Do I paint the whole room, do some kind of pattern, accent wall?
-Bed? Solid wood (which just adds more wood to the room) or upholstered bed? I really like white but I'm not sure how would that go with oak trim.
-I was thinking of making a canopy where we could read a play. Or something else? I do wanna get her something cool for the room so she will be interested in being in there (now she is our master :))
-What to do with that ugly closet door?
- Where should I put some art? Layout of the room and art?
- Lighting? Right now there is an ugly ceiling light.

Suggestions?

Hi Tina,
I put together a visual for you.
My main goal was to show you how you can make the oak look beautiful in your daughter's room by repeating it in a piece of furniture.
I used the art as inspiration and I kept in mind that she will grow up fast!

You should paint the trim a nice, bold color or just white (windows and the closet). Since it's a kid's room, you could pick an art pieces you really like and take one color from it and make that the paint for the entire room. For example the art you have as the third pic. I would pick purple, blow up the canvas to a VERY large size to hang it up on the wall. What do you think?

Dear tinarogers, I drew inspiration from the first picture because it offers you the best solution for the small space. It also picks up colours from the inspiring picture. The only thing that I didn't like about the set up was a day bed that was over 2K! So I have attached cheaper and safer options for youl

IMO a neutral wall is best for the room for now. As she grows it will be fun to plan her next colour palette together! So for colour hits, go to town with bedding, pillows and decal for both the walls and closet doors.

Thank you so much for your comments Christy Tay & chemayne. At first I was thinking of keeping things as they are and just adding color with bedding, art and decals like you suggested chemayne. I really like the white trundle beds you've attached but then I wasn't sure that the furniture would go well with the trim. Would you paint the walls?
So I really entertain the idea of some light purple (Chirsty Tay) wall color and white furniture but had read that is probably not the smartest idea painting the trim (devalues the house?) Is that true? Christy Tay would you paint every wall purple or just one accent wall and then put up the blow up canvas?

I do like the coaster bed and I think i will buy that. It has a great storage as well. The bed still allows me to go either way with design. If I decide to paint the trim I have a white bed frame and can work with color on the walls. Right now I am wondering how would it look if I paint just the closet door white? Would that be weird?
Or I can also paint the bed in some bold color and ad color otherwise and not need to paint the walls and trim?

p.s i do like this bedding (soft and relax :))

Hi Tina, not sure how old your daughter is - but you'll just want to think about balance for her today vs. how long you want it to last. Something like this pic is great for a young girl, but she will grow out of it fast.

For art - a cool new iPad app came out that I am telling everybody about www.arttwo50.com - perfect for anybody looking to art-up their space - lets you see art hanging - jives with colors of the room. There seems to some art for kids, but you can't yet search just for that...

Sooo true decordoctor. She will be two next month and I am hoping to create something that she can use for at least 5-6 years and then we would do some changes together if she felt like it :)) I will check that app, thanks a lot

I would leave the trim for now.... It's not offensive but the sliding doors aren't very nice..., could u just change those to something else we have the milky white mirrorndoors and they would look lovely there.... Or u could use blackboard paint perhaps On them?
I would pick one colour u love from the artwork and paint the wall that u r hanging it on in that colour as a feature plus it will make the art really pop .... Just make sure it goes with the bedding u choose too..... Then I'd stop and regroup at that point to work out what's needed still ....good luck

Yeah tell me about it Sharon, they are hideous :)) Can you please post a picture of the doors you are talking about? I like the idea of the accent wall as well just not sure which one will be yet :) thanks

I agree with Sharon regarding the trim. If you are inclined to paint the walls, consider these greens to draw in the greenery of your garden. (also goes with the oak trims)
More importantly these colours also pick up the green and yellow in the bedding of your choice

I'm not a realtor or anything, but to me if you painted it white, I find it easier to sell at a price that you want. Keeping the honey oak like wood may be more difficult to sell. When I compare house values, I also look at what could sell the fastest without having to negotiate. Then again, I don't know what type of wood the trimmings are made of. If they are actually high quality wood, I would just keep it as is. Don't paint your door, it's beautiful!

Hmm. It depends on if you want a simple room that is calm and pretty or a room that is playful. For simple, I would go with all the same color or paint two walls. For playful, I would go multiple colors and your idea of the color arrangement.

Hello again,

So I looked online for the frosted glass doors that Sharon suggested and I really like them. My question is which one would look better, just frosted one, the one with white trim or maybe oak one? I just bought the two bedding I have put pics on but haven't bought the bed yet. I will get the white bed (i think:)) so i thought maybe the white trim and glass door would look good? Any opinions?

Hi the second pic is younger and fresher looking ... The pic is below but not the silver trim was thinking more that the frosted look is reflective and easy to cleAn and fresh... Not to be a feature as the rest of the lovely goodies u r buying will do that :-)

Thanks Sharon, yeah I'm liking the second picture better as well. I like that fresh and young look and I think it will be ok with honey pine trim? What do u think.? I haven't decided on the paint yet but that can tie it all together as we'll I reckon :)

Just double check that the glass door is tempered glass or put on a protective film over it what with young kids about.
