Tractor mounted snowblower thoughts?

last modified: 7 years ago

I've been thinking about getting a snowblower for my Bolens 1000. I can get either a 32 inch or 36 inch single stage. Is it worth it over a walk behind? The only experience I have is with a John Deere 210 and blower and wasn't overly impressed. Too many issues with traction even with weights and chains. The Bolens does have a locking diff and heavier rear end. My driveway is 2 car wide and about 150 feet long. It is gravel and my property is surrounded by farm fields so lots of drifting too. Currently takes anywhere from an hour to 2 hours+ with a 24 inch Simplicity walk behind depending on snow. About the same with tractor and plow.

My memories of using a tractor mounted snowblower was mostly good. Except when you couldn't get out of the wind like you could with a walk behind as you could manage a crosswise pattern. When I sold them, we did have 2 stage available- though the single stage Haban? built ones were well liked. My beef is some tractor / snowblower switch overs were a bugger to do. That Bolens of yours would be quite the machine once you got it blowered up!

Yt125 , on a positive note , you could reduce your snowblowing duration to perhaps an hour . The downside another piece of auxiliary equipment to service also the exposure to sudden wind redirection changes as Tom has advised !

I found a 36" for it locally. Picking it up on Saturday. I'll post pics when I get it mounted up.

Good deal. Looking forward to it. Curious if this is a Haban unit with the oak auger bushings.

Here it is. Gearbox is good and everything is tight. I'm pretty sure FMC made these themselves. All I need is a piece of chain for the lift.

I tried it out the other day and again today. About 6" of heavy wet snow each time and that single stage sure doesn't like it. I smoked the belt a couple times. I guess a 2 stage is the way to go. I'm also ready to give up on tire chains. So far I've tried both sets of 23x8.50-12 chains I have on hand and no matter how tight I get them they come off after a few passes with tighteners or not.

Well, bugger! Hopefully it will do better when it gets cold and dry. It's been 40 years since I've used the one as a kid. For kicks I Googled the blower and there is one on the EBay. That one has the drum style auger that Toro used to use on the 2 stage. How many horse was that engine you put on there again? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sears-Suburban-Tractor-SS12-SS16-GT18-42-Snowthrower-/323988239764?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

We got another 4 inches today of dryer stuff. I let it work at its own pace and it did decent. It's a 13hp on it and once the governor kicked in it was throwing it a good 15 feet.

15-20' for a single stage unit is decent !

I put her hard to work today. We got over a foot total and the snow dried out. I broke a path around the barn and did my neighbors driveway down the road. After getting the hang of it and letting it munch in 1st low range I was launching snow about 25 feet in some spots. The GX390 sounds great loaded down and only burned 1/2 a gallon of gas. Now I need to get some drift cutters.

25' is more than some 2stage blowers accomplish . 36" will service your needs well with the 13 hp engine .

I found this and thought I would share. I find it interesting how they refer to it as a "snow caster".
