Shower door swing help!

I am getting my shower glass ordered and need to decide where I want the door and fixed panel. Look at each picture and let me know what you think. The pink X is the shower controls and shower head, the smaller blue Xs are my towel hooks. Yellow is fixed panel and red is swinging door. I want to be able to reach a towel without getting out of the shower. It is a pretty cramped space that we will most likely expand later. (We would be keeping the shower and toilet in the same location, just bumping out the wall that has the entry door and vanity on it.) Option 1 or 2?

Definitely option one in order to turn on the shower. I hang my towel on the door handle before I enter the shower.

A sliding door would also work.

Your best option would be to have sliding doors instead of a swinging door. With option 2, you'll have to reach in to turn on the shower and will get sprayed with cold water every time you do. Option 1 allows you to reach in and turn on the shower without getting sprayed, but it's awkward to have the door open into the space in front of the sinks/cabinet.

I would choose option 2 to avoid bumping the vanity. In my recent remodel we have tiht door swing space so I purchased a large , soft door stop (looks like monkey paw knot) to make the door swings no farther. I also drop my towel on the shower mat since I don’t have towel bars on the glass.

Not a pro. What is the aisle width between the shower and vanity? From the diagram it seems too small to work. I wonder if you could do a corner sink instead in front of the toilet?

Is the bathroom already built, or are you still in construction mode?

A bypass door (sliders) will solve the space question and the access problem. You can buy a frameless door with heavy glass. The edges of the glass are polished just like the door and fixed panel you are discussing. It will be a clean look. You can have two towel bars, one inside for a wet washcloth and one outside for your towel. Go to your local glass and mirror shop to look at their displays.

I wouldnt do glass- i would do a nice shower curtain (easier to clean ) and more spacious

Were it me I would have the door hinged off the glass panel.

Option 2. The door will swing both in and out, so you can reach your towel standing in the shower, and can still reach in to turn the water on.

We went with a slider just for that reason. I actually like it better than the door in my previous MB. I can’t post the photo but it has rollers on top like a barn door.

I love my slider, it’s perfect for a tight space.

Use a sliding door whose movable door is on the right. You'll be able to reach in and adjust the water by opening the door just a few inches -- less splashing. Plus a sliding door won't bang into anything. Throw your towel over the top of the fixed glass panel before you get in.

Sliding door opens near the shower controls and have the towel hook on the wall sepearting the toilet from the shower.

    sliding door

have towel hooks inserted through the stationery glass panel. I stood inside the sample shower at the glass company and extended my arm. They measured how far and high I could reach and put the through-the-glass hooks there. No dripping. I dry off in the shower.

Thanks everyone.. the room is already done, but like I mentioned, we are most likely going to expand the room later to create more space between the vanity and shower/toilet. I didn't think of doing bypass because I felt like the hinged door was 'nicer' but maybe that was a thing of the past. I am worried about getting sprayed and the glass door getting soaked in option 2 because our shower head is an extended rain shower type.

Also voting for a slider as well.

One of the bathrooms in the house I grew up in had a hinged door and no matter what we tried, water always got everywhere when you would try to grab the towel. There was also no good place to put it except the floor. We have a slider now that's much easier.

Option 1, and, if I were taking a shower, I’d fold the towel and put it on the counter by the sink!

Another vote for sliding -- you might even get one that has a large enough handle that it can hold your towel too!

Ours slide from both ends, so you can open one side to turn on the hot water, and the other side to get in...

Mine hinges like option 1 because we have a pony wall. We don’t have problems, but I might have a couple more inches to spare. I do like the slider being suggested if that’s possible to do at this stage.

If you have both doors sliding, you can reach in to turn the shower on and adjust the temperature from the right door, then get into the shower from the left door. If the left door has a good towel bar, it’s easy to reach when you need it.
If you MUST have a door which opens, do #2. When you are in there, lock the bathroom door so nobody will accidentally open the bathroom door as you open the shower door.

I throw the towel over the top of the door. I also get in the shower, close the door, take down the spray head, then turn on the water. No issues with water spraying everywhere.

Have you considered not having a door?

If you haven’t already bought your vanity consider the shallow IKEA like this:

You need every inch of floor space regardless if you do sliders (my vote) or not
