Kitchen Design Ideas Needed

I've attached a "shell" of our kitchen and would love your advice on what to put where with regards to the necessities and keeping in mind the work zones - sinks (double and prep), 2 D/W, trash/recycle bins, fridge, double oven, cooktop, microwave, and maybe a coffee/drink station. The area is 16'9" wide by 15' deep. Also, if you have any thoughts on the island shape/design and where to place an outdoor BBQ (off the liv/din room deck or the back patio?) Thank you! I've learned so much from this website :)

Is that pantry pass through just small for groceries? Could moving the laundry room elsewhere, maybe closer to the bedrooms, be part of the project? I'm just wondering if the laundry could convert to a walk through pantry for you.

The laundry is close to the master bedroom (which is left of entry way). And yes, it's a convenient way for more storage for the small appliances (blender, mixer, etc) and grocery walk thru, etc.

What is the scale of the drawing? I ask because you wrote (and the drawing shows) that the kitchen is 16'9" x 15' -- but the side of the kitchen that is 16'9" takes up 34 squares, and the side that is 15' takes up 25 squares so they're not in scale to each other. Seems to me that each square on the 15' side is equal to 7.2" and each square on the 16'9" side is equal to about 5.91" (but I'm admittedly very bad at math so who knows if my numbers are correct). The "pass through" in the pantry is only 2 squares wide. Since it's the same "direction" as the 15' side of the kitchen, that would make it less than 1.5' wide. I'd be shimmying through it sideways.

Draw it as 1/4"= 1'. Corner/angled door pantries suck and aren't conducive to good design.

Wow! mama goose_gw zn6OH Thank you for putting so much thought into these designs. Yes, the drawing I attached is not to scale but I just need some general ideas to start thinking about. The width of the pantry is about 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 ft. However, that can all be adjusted at this point (can make smaller, narrower, etc). And the window size can change as well. What are your thoughts about having the Refrigerator on the south wall, making it closer to the dining room?

You're going to be taking many more steps to prepare a meal, than in the first plan I posted, and the clean-up zone will be between the prep and cooking zones--meaning you will be crossing zones with helpers. Making aisles wider will help somewhat, if more than one person is working in the kitchen, and you have the space to adjust the aisles. This is quick and dirty, but gives you an idea of the work flow. Compare the lengths of the lines with the first plan, above.

If the window could be changed to two smaller windows, the range could go on the same wall as the fridge, with clean-up switched to the other wall. That puts the clean-up and dish storage zone farther away from dining, but maybe that's a good trade for you--to get the fridge closer to the dining area, and you go back to a more compact prep zone:

I don't think your planned corner pantry with passthrough will have any more storage than a reach in pantry. If you're open to skipping that and just putting in a pocket door to the laundry room, this might be a good starting point. Note that the site line from the front entry is your range and the clean up sink is tucked away a bit...

I think that's an excellent alternative to the corner pantry, and the island will work well in your preferred orientation. It will provide landing space for the fridge and ovens, since there is no adjacent countertop landing.

I made a slight change--moved the sink and window over to leave more space for dish storage beside the DW:

@bens bride Thank you for your input but I've had both a walk in and reach in pantry and would really prefer to make a walk in work. Just need to brain storm a bit more :)

@mama goose_gw zn6OH Thanks again for your thoughtful input to this design. I do like a walk in pantry and would love to make it work.

What's the best free "user friendly" software to create something like this myself. I've heard of sketch up but it seems complicated :-|

Would adding a small peninsula on the dining room side help with the cabinet space issue? I'm in the very beginning/planning stage of the floor plan. The only thing that can't be changed at this point is the elevator (I think). I still would love to have the fridge on the wall w/ window. It seems like it would be such a long walk from dining table to fridge (for drinks, condiments, etc). Maybe to the right of the clean up area (just left of the pantry door)?
