I think you might have some responses if you expand your post. Do you already have any furniture or do you need help buying things? If you already have furniture, pictures would help.

Do you have furniture already? What do you mean by "from the right side of the window to the left" ? Is there a tv?

I don’t have any furniture already. I want to put a couch in the little nook on the right side of the window. Perhaps a sectional with a chaise. And I want to put a Reading Chair right bear the window on the right side. The left side of the room can be a tv watching area for my 8 year old child. There’s a black tiled L- shaped area that runs about two feet from the appliances and counters in the kitchen. Which leaves an awkward rectangle for a “table” in the dining area. I was thinking of putting a dining island there to add some height in the room.

I kinda didn’t want to give out my ideas because I wonder how someone with fresh eyes would see this space.

Also right now I sleep in this space because my daughter has the bedroom but that can change eventually. What are your thoughts? I get so depressed trying to arrange something in here because it is so awkward.

I am not sure where the dining room is that you describe. But based on the info I have, here is what I would do. A sectional is rarely a good idea and not a good idea in this case. Chairs by the windows would be swivel chairs.

Omg.... I totally love it!. One last question. What should I do with that weird space behind the couch?

Also, I’m a single mom and have been struggling with my furniture layout for over a year. Just getting someone to seriously look at my space feels so good! Like I feel cared for. I was getting seriously depressed about my space. I never considered swivel chairs.

Bar would be like this. Another idea for you......so you don't have to use that awkward tiled dining area (still not sure exactly where that is).........you can buy adjustable coffee tables that double as dining tables.

As a NYC dweller, I live in and have been in many small apartments. If you want to give the room to your child but still have a decent looking living space consider a wall bed. It will fold up in the morning and you’ll have a living/dining space. I can’t tell the size but immediately to the right it looks like you could fit one. If not Queen, then full size?

This is probably left field but if there are only the two of you, could you share the bedroom with your daughter with bunk beds or two singles or single and trundle? Just a thought.

I would want my 8 year old to be asleep by a certain time. Have a quiet space to sleep. It would allow for some sense of quiet “me time” as well.

Of course definitely go with a sectional and ottomans ..that way you can move it around to your needs and take it with you ...one large sofa ..always is a problem unless you need it in your permanent home in the future .

You mentioned needing a dining table. I would scour the local used furniture dealer/stores,antique stores and flea markets ect for a gateleg table. City dwellers have been using them more than 100 years to have a dining table. Ikea's Norden gateleg table would work as well. It seats 4 and folds up to 10 inches.

In your situation, I always recommend that you take advantage of all you vertical space. With that said, I would flank your sofa with wardrobe cabinets for hanging clothes & shoes. Then look at doing some something similar around the tv for more clothing and whatever other needs you have. I’m showing a sofa with a chaise lounge that is a sofa/sleeper. I would look at getting a kitchen island with an overhang for eating but also will give you more storage. To me, IKEA would be the place to start shopping because of the pricing and the amount of customization.
