I'm not sure what the point is. I like blue and hate pink, but I'm not going to criticise or question those whose likes and dislikes are the opposite of mine. If you don't like shiny countertops, don't install them.

It‘s bad internet etiquette to use all caps, because it’s equivalent to shouting at your audience. That you say you do it all the time IS inconsiderate. Why do you think it’s not? You are deliberately shouting at everyone. Your title is also rude to everyone who has granite in their kitchens. And, worst of all, you make the statement that you LOVE (your caps) honed granite and think it’s gorgeous.

Here are some caps for you, since you say they are fine: YOU SAY YOU HATE GRANITE, THEN SAY YOU LOVE IT. MAKES NO SENSE.

I’m not a fan of most granite, shiny or honed, and don’t really like shiny countertops. I love Glacier White Corian and soapstone. I do love Cpartist’s gorgeous quartzite countertops for the colors. They’re very special.

What Shannon said...spot on. If you make a statement that you hate granite, but then say you love honed granite, then you do NOT hate granite. It‘s shiny granite and surfaces you dislike. When posting, accuracy is important.

It‘s universally known that typing in all caps is SCREAMING at your audience. It is rude. Now that you know that, it’s time to change that habit...especially if you want people to listen to what you’re saying.

You “hate” them, so obviously, you’re not going to install them. What we think is not going to change your mind, so why ask?

You want stone with a matte finish, then soapstone is the best choice. It’s impervious to everything, doesn’t stain or etch...never needs sealing. Soapstone is warm to the touch. It never gets cold, even in cold winters. Get a hard variety, like Belvedere, or Stormy Black, which are durable, and do not chip or scratch.

Please think before you type and hit send. Editing is a good thing.

While I can almost appreciate a granite in somebody else’s kitchen on a rare occasion, I pretty much hate all granite. When I designed my first kitchen 13 years ago, this forum was aggravating as all get out because it seemed that every other post was about which granite they should choose or some problem or another with their granite, or with their granite installer, or does this granite have too much movement, or ARGGHHH.

Thank goodness those days are gone!

I am cutting the OP some slack because I am guessing she is about 20, maybe 25, given how oblivious she is. I doubt she has the several thousands for the honed granite she LOVES and says “= So Gorgeous”. That is why she isn’t asking any actual question about counters for a kitchen.

In response to the OP...do what you love. I tried to like quartz because it’s so abundant these days, but it wasn’t me. Just in this finishing process on our kitchen Reno and loving our shiny, busy granite counters. At the end of the day...I am so grateful for the opportunity to walk into a kitchen that I love every morning. Whatever surface makes you feel that way is the one for you :)

People, the OP is a troll. This entire thread is about trolling. The OP could be 10 years old or 90. Trolls’ posts are written to be purposely offensive, extraneous, and off-topic. Honed and leathered countertops are some of my favorites as well-- especially soapstone. Do what you like in your home-- we've been told by multiple pros and realtors that buyers purchase with an eye toward renovating anyway, so don't make decisions on things like countertops with anyone's pleasure except your own in mind. :)

I posted this on 4 other Sites.....the exact same way.......not one of them had an issue with the wording or the caps, in fact I got numerous postitive responses.......why is this site so stuffy? It never used to be this way.

Are you so unaware that you do not remember that your OP title is about hate, and that you asked that question about hating several times? To an audience you know very well have granite?

You say you have been on Gardenweb for a long time. Yet you do not know that all caps is rude, that asking about hating a standard kitchen feature that thousands of people have is rude. You are being disingenous (i.e. intentionally fake, if you don't know what that word means).

If I were to copy your OP identically, except instead of granite, it would read about your decor, how do you feel:

Gosh, this thread is cracking me up. People talk about what they hate- just not using that particular word so much. I've seen plenty of threads that are "so over" shaker cabinets, or white on white on grey on greige on black color concepts. That can't stand brick or stone in the house and encourage people to rip it out or at least paint it over so it isn't so hideous. Or how terrible it is that some folks like to hang up word signs in their kitchens. How tacky trend whatever was or is.

I've seen threads that go into the hate of taking a style of house and gutting it out to make it another style instead- and hate of the old style and how it needs to be replaced with something else instead.

There's even some hating on non-stone countertops in the kitchen that goes around too. There was even a poll in the last few months for folks to rank kitchen countertop materials from most liked to most disliked. And people got into it with the love and hate there.

Often threads that hate start with a person expressing their hate of something they own- a room color, or appliance, or their kitchen whatever. Sometimes I've seen threads that start with an innocent thing like picking out a paint color or a table, and turn into a little fest of hating the room in general and telling the person they need to get rid of it all or change a bunch of stuff the OP didn't even ask about or was already happy with.

Heck, we just recently had a hate thread about people that have HU##### names, and how they should change that. The word hate wasn't used in the title, but telling a bunch of people their names are bad and need to be changed is pretty hateful.

We are generally a bunch of kinder folks, but there is also a lot of negativity to go around as well. It's kind of part of the point of asking for advice from a bunch of strangers- you can get a mixed bag of advice to work with, and that isn't a bad thing.

Wow this disintegrated quickly. To the OP - you are entitled to your opinion but I agree that the CAPS thing is off-putting. It sets the tenor whether others agree with you or not. Seeing your guest bedroom I understand why you like subdued finishes best. Before you decide on a honed finish whether its granite, Silestone or soapstone, I suggest that you read up on the pitfalls which could include sopping up fingerprints and have aggravated many a poster on here. After having black countertops for over 20 years it wasn't something that I wanted to repeat. The light background is easier on my eyes and I love having the beautiful blue sky in my kitchen. To each their own.

True, not many folks start topics just to discuss their hate or dislike of something, unless it's something they already have and openly discuss how much they hate it. It's OK to start a topic to say you hate the granite countertops that are in your kitchen, but not OK to start a topic to say you hate that in general.

I'm not going to start a thread about my general distaste for stone countertops in the kitchen in general, but I can understand why someone would. Or express their hate for a particular stone countertop material. And how it would likely go over rather badly since many people here are fond of stone countertops in the kitchen.

Maybe a topic about hating something does not seem odd or overly offensive to me because I see a lot of it in the gardening forums- folks hating on particular plants or bugs or critters.. or neighbors. Sometimes the soils and composting threads can be terrible. Kitchen table and cooking areas get sprinkled with the hate too.

Fortunately most of the time, most folks start threads in softer language, even when they are complaining or hating on something.

@wilson853...unlike the other black surfaces you mentioned, soapstone will not show fingerprints. It won’t sop up fingerprints, or anything left on them. Soapstone is impervious to staining and etching. Cleaning soapstone is a breeze, just dish soap and water. It’s also antimicrobial.

Hi darbuka, I dallied with the idea of soapstone for awhile and read as much as I could. The comments from tinker_2006 in this thread made me think that they probably weren't for me. Before I started to research I had no idea that there were so many varieties and different ways to care for them. I was not into the idea of having to oil them if I wasn't happy with the natural patina. Sounds like you have one that is very easy to care for.

What I am seeing from @colorblind1961 is zero ownership of her behavior, but instead is talking about "a wakeup call" for people on this forum. No wake up call for @colorblind1961? She has not acknowledged that she escalated the tone of this thread to become what it has. This is why I called her a troll earlier. Trolls cause escalation of anger in a thread, which they enjoy. Then they absolve themselves of everything, and blame everyone else. Textbook.

Most of the people who have replied on this thread are extremely helpful to others posting questions on this forum. They will spend huge amounts of time helping people with their kitchens.

I don't know if I'd call the thread hateful, exactly. The subject is silly - lots of people hate lots of things, and say so, but not too many come here looking to form a support group to share their hatred (I exclude Hot Topics from this generalization). If the OP doesn't like shiny granite but likes honed, then she should have honed. She doesn't need advice on what to like or dislike and in fact hasn't asked for any. And no one at all has attacked her for disliking shiny granite. However, the implicit message that those who do like shiny granite have inferior taste to her own is unfriendly, while the insistence of the use of caps which she knows to be rude is simply the adult equivalent of the kindergarten kid sticking out her tongue, as is quoting the hostile comments from other websites. this forum is full of threads putting people down for their taste. there is a thread with tons of people explaining how they hate open plan. It happens all the time. So I am not sure why this particular post got such a response. It is not the most interesting post, but I have seen a lot worse.
