I did a wall of books in a basement hallway fpr a client and we lit the shelves with recessed eyball LEDs aligned in the hallway at a distance that lit up all the books

We're lighting our bookshelves with picture lights. If you type in, "picture lights on bookcases", here on Houzz you'll find lots of great ideas. Some you'd want to hire someone to install, others that you can easily do yourself.

We found picture lights lit up only the top couple of rows but maybe mounted where we mounted ours instead of off the wall might work

At my previous house, we did track lighting with small colored glass shades and led bulbs. The big advantage for us was it only required one electrical connection. We had no interest in trying to install lights into a finished masonry ceiling. The most expensive part of the project turned out to be the LED bulbs as I found the rest of the components at ReStore.
