I use cone thread all the time. I have a spool holder so the threat comes up and feeds through my machine and doesn't catch on any moving parts. They are inexpensive to purchase, (less than $10) or you can google how to make your own. There are several DIY methods of making one.

I use cone thread, too. Just check the quality of the thread - a lot of serger thread is not very strong. It's fine for using four strands to overcast an edge but might not work for a seam. If possible, see if it breaks easily when you tug on it.

And watch out for it being old. Often sales like that have old cones that really should be avoided. I buy most of my thread in cones and use a "stand" like Sue mentioned.
