With where you are wanting the rug and sofa placed it would be best to angle the rug with more of it under the sofa instead of lining it up to the legs. This would also help make the space look more open and less squared off. If you are more partial to keeping it squared off using a 10X13 is the better option if the two.

The current size should work just fine, if you're still unsure once you angle it, you can post another picture for reference and we can look at the size.

It's the perfect size, leave the rug where it is but move the sofa over (away from the wall with the door) so that the end of the rug is in the middle of the chaise and the legs on the other end of the sofa are on the rug. Put a table behind the sofa where the bump out is to fill that space.

I think that size is great! Definitely wouldn't go any bigger than that.

The TV is on the wall over the bar. Shouldn’t the sectional be facing the entertainment area? I don’t see other seating for watching TV.

Thanks felizlady...There are two TVs in the space...the sectional is facing another larger TV.

The room definitely needs an additional bit of color. Hang some art on the wall and add a coffee table.

It's one large room in our basement that we just finished so just starting to buy furniture, artwork, etc. Would love to do some colorful, fun pictures for the wall..just haven't found them yet! Here are some more pics of the space...Thanks All!!!

The real problem is that the rug is too similar to the floor.

If you don't want to move the sectional, then get a rug large enough to fill the nook and extend past the chaise by at least a foot.

Thanks All! For those that mentioned the current rug doesn't work, can you provide an idea of what you'd suggest instead? Is it the colors that don't work or the size or both?

I think the problem is the sectional. Its too big for the space, people sitting next to the closet can't even see the TV and it looks crammed into the nook.. Try Grover's idea to move it before you worry about the the rug.

I think the color and the size of the rug are just fine! I prefer to keep larger pieces like rugs and sofas more neutral, and then bring color in through the accessories and artwork. That way it's versatile and can easily adjust as your style changes. Good start!

Amose13, I think the rug colors are fine. I think you probably need a bigger size.

Rug size is fine but a pop of color is needed. Also, you can solve the utility closet door problem by reducing the length of the door (cut an inch off the bottom).

If you remove the single seat section from the sectional and pull it away from the wall it will look much better, but you also need a slightly larger rug.

I don’t like that rug on that floor. While the colors “go” together, the overall mottled rug coloring and the overall flooring multicolor strip pattern conflict. It’s like a floral blouse and a striped skirt. I would select a larger rug in a solid color. The room needs an accent color for accessories. And the tv is too high. I would get a large credenza with storage and hang the TV about 6-8” above the credenza.

Totally agree with bumping the sofa out away from the wall. It will help the rug size issue. Otherwise, a slightly larger rug would be a bit better.

Get rid of the rug. The flooring is beautiful, and the rug's complex color scheme against brown flooring and a gray sofa is not bringing out the best in this room.

Get a rug that is a more solid color. The room is large and seems to have a lot of light. Something with texture, even shaggy. The style of the room seems contemporary. The sectional needs some colorful and patterned throw pillows. And artwork. Take your time with art. You should love it, not just like. Try local art festivals. And you can’t beat prints of the masters. I think the room looks abstract. Do you like abstract art?

The rug looks too small the way it’s currently positioned. I’d bring it out and forward away from the wall so it doesn’t interfere with the closet door. However, the room is too monochromatic for my taste. Bringing in a rug with a bit of color and patter would give the room much needed vibrancy and movement. Adding some throw pillows to your sofa that have some of the rug colors would pull the whole look together.

Those rugs are beautiful, but they are too complicated for the wood flooring. The wood has lots of pattern and contrast. Rugs and floors need to work together to make each look their best. The rug does not need to be boring. What is your favorite color? Blues would work lovely. Cool color to balance the warmth of the wood. You may be buying, bring home, laying it down, hating it, taking it back, again and again and again. I have been in that place. It is physically and emotionally taxing. I actually hurt my shoulder. Be patience and have your family and friends help. But when you find a rug you love, it will all be worth. And you will forget about everything you went through, until you need a new rug for somewhere else...

I respectfully disagree. The sofa is neutral, the walls are neutral and the floor is neutral. Adding a pop of pattern and color will do wonders to make the room much more interesting.

When you put a sofa up against a wall it looks like a furniture store. Pull it away and put a sofa table behind it. One lamp is plenty. The floor is a bold pattern in a large room. That dictates your pattern. Work with solids when choosing rugs.

Felizlady please help! The floor are indeed a neutral color. The color is not the problem. It is the pattern and the different shades in the wood graining. Look at the first photo

Before you decide on rug, make sure of furniture configuration. Rugs should be about 12” under front legs or more of furniture. The existing configuration of your sectional is awkward to say the least. Can you exchange some of the sectional or exchange for sofa and a couple swivel chairs?

Pull sofa away from wall and lower TV. I don’t love the rug but if you do, you cAn make it work. If you. An return it, What about a soft ivory shag with a subtle gray pattern? Add color in pillows, throws and art.

I agree with three suggestions above. With those busy floors, the rug needs to be a solid color and the shag idea sounds wonderful because you really need some texture in the room. A sofa table with lamps as suggested will solve your couch-on-the-wall issue which is never good placement. Finally that TV is way too high and needs to come down closer to eye level. My neck hurts looking at the picture. Looks like it will be wonderful place to hang out once you get it all in place. Good luck!

Move that couch and rug is fighting with the floor. All plain Jane but work with pillows and I would ditch the rug. A solid color of with a very shade difference and it would come together. I also feel pictures are way to close together. Just A thought.
