I have been researching biochar and I would like to add it to my beds. If you buy raw biochar, it sucks the nutrients and microbes from the soil so slows growth at first before adding value later. It is possible to "charge" raw biochar to make it effective day 1.

The long-term benefit seems to be that it has massive surface area and draws in nutrients and microbes and makes them available to roots on a very consistent basis.

The stuff is not cheap, so I have been looking around at options.

The best online price I found is this Wakefield raw biochar at $43.67/1 cubic foot w/tax + shipping..

Checking out some pot-growing forums, I found a lot of respect for BuildASoil that happens to be in Montrose. I turns out that they have good prices also.

BAS charged 1 cu ft would be $53.63 and the raw should be about $10.50 less but the shipping amount was not working right on the site. The pot people highly recommend the charged.

I have found that I can get a full cubic yard of charged biochar delivered for under $600 - or about $22 per cubic ft. That is way more than I need, but I could split this up if there is enough interest.

I could sell this at $15 for a Home Depot 5 gal bucket load - about 70% of a cubic foot. Let me know if you are interested and how much.

Recommended amounts I have seen are either 1 cu ft per 50 sq feet surface area or 10% of raised bed soil. The 10% for 5 inches deep of soil works out to more like 1 cu ft for 25 sq ft.
