Narrow side-yard reimagined

We redid a narrow side yard to create a tranquil space in which to hang out. Previously this space was just a neglected part of our property with an ugly downspout that made cutting the grass a pain and often left a marshy puddle when we had heavy rain.

First task was to bury about 40’ of corrugated pipe to deal with the downspout.


Next was to remove all the existing grass and grade the area away from the house.


Once the groundwork was done, I set about building the fence and gate, as well as a small “deck” for a single chair and table.



A little metal edging, some crushed bluestone chips, and I was ready to hand the reins to my wife who did all the soft-scape stuff. She put in a variety of interesting things to provide texture and a little color.



Still have plans for some sculpture pieces that’ll go along, and even on the wall, and perhaps a little more vertical color in the plantings come spring. For now, we’re pleased with how it’s turned out.
