Challenging galley kitchen

Our contractor said this wasn't the smallest kitchen he had worked on but with everything we wanted in such a small amount of space, it was a challenge. After weeks of uncertainty about everything from the floor to the countertop to the subway tile to the grout...in the end, we love how it turned out. And, the best part of all, even though the footprint is the same, it somehow feels bigger! :)

Looks great! The new upper cabinets don't look any taller than the old ones. Did you raise them, or lower the ceiling?

Very cute! You should change your post title to a "reveal" or a "before and after" to get more attention.

Thanks so much for the nice comments! The upper cabinets are actually taller than the old ones (except the two above the sink). We had the soffit removed so they could go to the ceiling and also give us a little bit more under counter height. Wow, now that I look at this picture again, it's hard to believe everything fit.

Nancy, love your sink - well, love the whole result! Who makes the sink? And can you tell us about your counters - type of wood, finish etc.

We have a galley too. I love working in it, compared to my former L. Yours is cute as a button.

Thank you! Everything is from IKEA. The cabinets are Bodbyn white, the countertops are called Karlby (in walnut), and the double farmhouse sink was so inexpensive compared to others we priced.

Those countertops are gorgeous. The one long stretch of counter makes the space so much bigger and more open. Great design job.

having the floor tile on the diagonal also helps with the optical illusion of making the kitchen seem bigger. looks good!

Beautiful transformation. Looks like you transitioned to a counter depth refrigerator. I did too and makes a huge difference.

Love it! I’m about to start renovating a small kitchen, so I’m curious about your appliances. Can you give detail on your choices? I’m struggling with what will fit best. Thanks!

terryshope, thanks! all appliances were from ikea.

    Here are the details...

Refrigerator: Nutid side-by-side (counter depth saver)

Cooktop: Eldig 4 element glass ceramic

    Oven: Nutid thermal self-cleaning

    Dishwasher: Spolad built-in

    Microwave: Betrodd with extractor fan

We chose IKEA mainly for the convenience and the 5-year warranty. We've only had them a few months but so far so good and no complaints, other than the dishwasher taking longer than our old one. It's super quiet though and does a good job.

This renovation, I LOVE! That last photo that shows the floor in and the cabinet just starting to get hung. I can't believe you fit everything in there either. You can see a number of decisions you made to make that small space look larger. All together, it just sings! It's so cozy, light and airy. The glass doors on the uppers, excellent. Diagonal on the floor, always amazes me how that makes a space look larger. The wood counter is the star! Beautiful, beautiful job!

As the former owner of a galley kitchen, this warms my heart! The new fridge and bringing the cabinets up to the ceiling really helped!

I can't tell if the cabinets are standard depth or a shallow, but they seem fit to the space you have very well too.

I love the warm wood counters against the cabinets. It's a nice balance.

I just noticed something, did you take out a dishwasher? And I'd be very interested to know what the dimensions of that space are.
