GJ was planted in late spring and ignored most of the summer when my husband was hospitalized and then recovered at home. Since then she has thrown out long canes taller than I am, but she has also sent out shoots from the center. Both canes and shoots bloomed all season. I had received great suggestions for pegging the canes next spring to grow along the fence behind her. As you can see from these photos, several canes have already reached the fence.

The rose was planted in a rich mix of a small amount of peat moss, garden soil, and Coast of Maine Lobster Compost. I only watered her a few times all season. She is magnificent and was still in bloom a few days ago when I took these photos.

Questions:

1. Should I tie and wrap these canes to protect them from the winter winds that come up river?

2. Should I mound up leaves, etc., in a wrap at her base?

3. Will she like having dirt and mulch piled up at the base?
