Geez, it must be depressing reading these. I sure hope this not the norm, though there could be some really good insights on traps or pitfalls to avoid. @Mark Bischak

I have been documenting our build for family and friends on Instagram. I love being able to look back and see the exact dates each thing took place.

I would love to have that Kristin! That will be amazing when everything is finished to see how things changed.

@Missi Smith We are pretty late to the game with Instagram, I’ve seen some really nice pictures there, too bad I didn’t find out about this earlier, it is definitely a fun and easy way to track progress!

@Kristin S You’ve got a such a high-tech way to videotape the build! We also use a time lapse camera and tie it to a tree in the yard. It’s super hard to find a good vantage point though and the battery only lasts for one day.

I use MarsEdit for posting which makes things a bit easier and less time consuming than Wordpress alone.

We also have Instagram though I've not updated it lately. Immediate family and a couple of friends are also part of an Apple photos shared folder where we share quick snaps occasionally.

For yourself it's important to take lots and lots of photos and notes about the build, write notes about every meeting with builder, architect or anyone else involved (amazing how quickly details are forgotten). It's also a good idea to followup phone conversations w/ an email to make sure everyone is thinking the same thing and for any discussion later after everyone has forgotten what was said.

@opaone Wow! Great blog, I will bookmark it and read the content later. Great advice on taking detailed meeting notes, we do not have a very good system for tracking all the details and have forgotten a few times what we discussed early on (oops!). If there is a good app for home construction that allows owner, builder, subcontractors, and suppliers to share information easily, I am sure it would be a great hit!!

Take lots of photos with measuring tape before the finished walls go up. That's better than x-ray vision to see what is behind the walls when things are finished.

Easy to get an overwhelming amount of photos and paperwork. Cloud drive, subdivided and organized.
