Any ideas how to make this area look better? We have a basement door that opens into the kitchen right there.

I'd center the table under the light, and lower the light fixture. I think standard is about 36 inches from the tabletop. Window valances with a print or a pretty check or stripe in a shade of blue to match the walls would dress this area up. How about a colorful bowl, again with a little blue in it, where you can keep your fruit. Looks so cozy already! Like that nook.

I can't see your kitchen but would it give you more room to go to the basement door if you had a rectangular table...small end toward the window?

OMG that space is so precious. You can probably build a small window banquette over the radiator and around the corner and maintain the clearance for the door. I would keep the round table - very efficient for smaller spaces.

Also, little things - you need a new light fixture, and would you be willing to paint the chairs your cream color, and add blue cushions?

I would love to have a banquet built actually! We are a family of 3 and have a. huge dining room for when we have guests. So the chairs that I have ACTUALLY are the dining room chairs but since my 3 year old refuses to eat on her booster seat I switched the chairs out since the others were fabric. I'll add a picture in a few!

I'd keep a pedestal table in the center . I'd get a little more chic light fixture over the table and a simple but slightly pretty curtain valance w ?sheers or a roller blind set up for light filtering. Iwould hunt down in your nearby area a real antique pine hutch or talller display cab for the wall there. Vintage vibe means layer things in does not mean big financial outlay . Would not paint what you have or build anything in ....

    Hey Christy,

The light looks like a nice vintage fixture that I would keep. I'd lower it and center the table underneath.

Sounds like the chairs will move back to the dining room eventually yes? They are the biggest change I would make to the space. Otherwise, I think it is a sweet, functional, pretty area. I would not congest it with the addition of a banquette - just too much in one space.

I'd like to see a different piece of art, and something smaller, hung where your current piece is.

Paint the chairs white, or a blue that coordinates with the color you already have on the walls. Cute space!

It’s already so pretty! As others have suggested, center the table under the light and change out your picture. Perhaps hang cafe type curtains on the lower half of your window. Some fabric would soften the room a bit more.

It's already very cute. Love the color. I'd change out the light fixture as it doesn't jive with the cozy look you have going on. I might change the table to a small rectangular one. I'd also look into changing out the white furniture piece to a vintage pine hutch - It would give the room real interest. Bamboo blinds hung very high so as not to impact the light would warm up the windows. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Pine-sideboard-hutch-Measures-54-wide-by-20-deep-by-81-tall/153674216556?hash=item23c7b2746c:g:Xq8AAOSwLfxdmfwO

Center the rug and table under the light but turn the table about a quarter turn so the chairs pull out into the corners. That will give a little more room to walk around it and will help feel like you have more space. You should be able to comfortably walk around the whole table. Especially with the stairs being right there. It's cute.

My table is my husbands mother old 42" round oak table and chairs. Don't know the size of yours but this is smaller than most I've seen but very comfortable for a small space. I know the lighting should be lowered but I lowered it as much as I could without replacing it. the previous owner had it even higher.

I agree that it’s a charming space. First thing I noticed is the word art - i would replace that with a bit smaller piece of colorful something. Not word art. And a different, bigger and more colorful rug.
