I think it needs to be higher. We have a stone FP and the mantle is

5‘ 6 “ high to the top of the mantle...Our ceiling is 8 ft. I’ll get you a pic

if you want to see a higher mantle on a stone FP. Our mantle also is

plain without brackets.

Is your ceiling 8 ft. high?

edit: forgot to mention I think your mantle width and thickness is perfect

for your FP.

No higher than #1 or there is not enough room if you would like to place something above the mantel. Not any lower or the mantel is too close to the heat.

By itself, I like the first choice, but I think it can depend a little bit on what you plan to put on/above it.
